Role Description

We're looking for a Managing Editor who will lead all things editorial for our website and the Goodnewspaper, our monthly print newspaper filled with good news. It's a senior leadership role where you're very much hands-on. You'll set content strategy, manage and develop a small editorial team, write stories, edit other people's work, and build the systems that let us publish well consistently. The Goodnewspaper ships every month on a hard deadline, and you'll own that deliverable.

You'll report to the Editor-in-Chief and CEO, and you'll manage at least one person from day one. Within the first year, we expect to hire at least one more writer, who will also report to you. The role will grow as the company grows.

We don't use AI to write any of our journalism. (Humans only!)

What this role looks like week to week

• Roughly 45% of your time goes to planning, writing, and editing articles for the website.
• Roughly 45% goes to brainstorming, managing, and writing for the Goodnewspaper.
• 10% goes to people management, scheduling, and logistics.

The newspaper runs on a monthly cycle — with some weeks' Goodnewspaper tasks being busier and other weeks being lighter. Each Goodnewspaper is roughly 14 pages of written content.

On the digital side, we publish good news articles at volume. You'd write around two web stories a day. Our approach is curatorial and fast. We want to be super specific about that, because it's not a fit for every journalist. The way we think of it: Good news exists in the world, but it's hard for our audience to find on their own. They trust our voice. Our job is to bring good news to our readers — in our style, with clarity and accuracy, in a timely fashion. It is not long-form enterprise reporting.

What you'll do

• Lead content strategy across the website and the Goodnewspaper, including a clear editorial POV and an ongoing pipeline of story ideas.
• Write original stories for the website and the Goodnewspaper, and edit work from other team members and contributors.
• Oversee republishing aligned articles from partner publications.
• Write headlines that are clear and specific.
• Ensure everything we publish meets our standards for accuracy, tone, voice, and formatting.
• Produce each monthly issue of the Goodnewspaper, from the brainstorm session through final “send to print” export.
• Clearly plan and communicate the schedule for each edition of the newspaper, including deadlines for writing, editing, illustrations, and printing.
• Coordinate with writers, designers, interview subjects, and contributors to deliver each issue on schedule, at the quality our print subscribers expect.
• Manage, coach, and develop at least one direct report from day one, with more hires expected within the first year.
• Build repeatable editorial processes so the team can grow while maintaining high reporting standards.
• Use traffic analytics, revenue data, and engagement metrics to inform editorial decisions.
• Grow website traffic and revenue.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of editorial experience, including writing, editing, and managing content across digital and/or print.
• Experience managing other writers or editors.
• Strong writing and editing, with a sharp eye for clarity, accuracy, and tone.
• The organization skills to juggle multiple deadlines, workflows, and contributors at once.
• Comfort using data (traffic analytics, SEO metrics) to inform editorial decisions.
• Familiarity with print production.
• A clear editorial POV paired with pragmatism.
• Interest in building systems and processes that make a small team more effective.
• Comfort covering social issues, human rights, climate, and politics with nuance and care.
• A curatorial sensibility.
• The ability to explain complex subjects to a general audience.

Bonus points for:

• Experience with mission-driven or solutions-oriented reporting.
• Relationships with syndication platforms and partners.
• Experience growing digital traffic and revenue.

Compensation and details

• Salary: $70,000–$76,000 a year, depending on experience.
• Location: fully remote (USA).
• Type: full-time.
• Reports to: Editor-in-Chief and CEO.
