Role Description
The Associate Director, Global Publications will play a key role within the Medical and Patient Affairs team, supporting the strategy, development, and execution of global scientific publication plans. This role is responsible for overseeing the translation of complex clinical, translational, and non-clinical data into high-impact manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and congress presentations. This position reports to the Director, Scientific Communications.

Strategic Publication Planning:
Lead the development, alignment, and execution of comprehensive global publication plans across preclinical and clinical assets to support scientific communications goals.

Publication Execution & Oversight:
Drive the end-to-end development of peer-reviewed manuscripts, congress abstracts, posters, and oral presentations in collaboration with internal authors, external investigators, and medical writers.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner closely with Clinical Development/Sciences, Biometrics, Translational Research, Regulatory Affairs, and Medical Affairs to ensure scientific accuracy, data alignment, and timely publication of study findings.

Steering Committee Leadership:
Establish and manage program-specific Publication Steering Committees (PSCs) and author working groups; facilitate authorship meetings, consensus-building, and data disclosure reviews.

Agency & Vendor Management:
Manage, and oversee external medical communications agencies, scientific writers, and graphics vendors, within scope, and in alignment with company standards.

Compliance & Governance:
Ensure all publication deliverables strictly adhere to Encoded’s Publication Policies, Good Publication Practice guidelines, the International Committee for Medical Journal Editors Recommendations for the Conduct, and applicable regulatory standards.

Systems & Workflow Management:
Oversee publication management software/tools for submission tracking, Medical–Legal–Regulatory (MLR) reviews, author agreements, and archival processes.

Congress Strategy & Execution:
Contribute to strategic congress planning, coordinate publication disclosures aligned with key scientific congresses; oversee scientific session coverage, presentation logistics, and post-congress scientific debriefs.

Support for Patient Advocacy and health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) publications, as needed.

Travel internationally & domestically as required.
Qualifications

A minimum of twelve years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or eight years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with three to five years of experience; or equivalent experience.

Three to five years of medical writing, publications, or scientific communications experience within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry or a medical communications agency.

Strong understanding of scientific publication processes, data communication, medical terminology, statistical methods, and compliance principles.

Proven ability to draft clear, concise scientific content and translate technical data for diverse audiences.

Excellent writing, editing, and project management skills with strong attention to detail.

Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple deliverables concurrently under standard supervision.

Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills and comfort working across cross-functional teams.

Ability to communicate complex scientific information empathetically with patient communities.

Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe presentation tools.
Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD) in a life science field.

Experience in gene therapy, epilepsy, neuroscience, or rare disease.

Knowledge of digital and multimedia scientific communication formats.

Comfort with graphic design and video editing tools.
Requirements

For candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area the salary range for this position is 180,000 - 210,000.
-
For USA based candidates residing outside the San Francisco Bay Area, the salary range is 170,000 - 195,000.

Encoded considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, internal equity and geographic location.

Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant skills, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
