[Hiring] Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform @Beacon Biosignals

Role Description

Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Software Engineer IV to join our Datastore team. The Datastore sits at the heart of Beacon's platform, defining our foundational data model and serving as the centralized repository and API for brain data collected from clinical studies.

This role emphasizes the design and scaling of backend systems for data infrastructure:

• PostgreSQL data models
• Kafka-driven event pipelines
• GraphQL API for scientific and clinical data usability

At this level, you will:

• Lead the design of complex systems within the Datastore
• Own the pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into our warehouse
• Collaborate across platform, application, and scientific teams to implement APIs

This role is 100% remote from anywhere in the U.S., with in-person office hubs in Boston, New York City, and Paris.

What success looks like

• Lead design and architecture for complex projects and systems within the Datastore
• Partner with product managers and stakeholders to translate requirements into new integrations
• Debug and profile ambiguous problems across system boundaries
• Implement features with attention to detail, demonstrating product awareness
• Draft RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design phases
• Plan your own work and contribute to team planning
• Teach and mentor other engineers regularly
• Leverage feedback to improve operational robustness and ease of use

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend development experience
• Highly proficient in at least one technical area relevant to this work
• Strong proficiency in SQL, with production experience working with PostgreSQL
• Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing
• Proficiency in Julia or Python
• Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments
• A track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices
• A collaborative mindset
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• A self-directed approach
• Experience with LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools

• Lead design across the breadth of the platform
• Design event-driven pipelines end to end
• Lead the design of complex systems across the API, pipelines, and services
• For the PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role:
• Deep PostgreSQL knowledge
• Data modeling expertise
• Schema evolution under load
• Operating PostgreSQL in production
• Teaching and documenting for team coherence

Benefits

• Salary range: $170,000 – $190,000
• Total compensation package includes equity, PTO, and other benefits
