[Hiring] Software Engineer @Kin Insurance

Role Description

Build scalable Ruby and Typescript applications that power Kin’s insurance platform. Solve complex problems, mentor engineers, and ship high-impact features in a fast-moving environment.

We’re looking for a Software Engineer, Back-End to help us build the products and features that make Kin operate. You’ll work on a small team within a Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL environment, collaborating closely with your immediate team as well as cross-functionally, and shipping work using our Agile/Scrum development practices.

This role gives you real ownership — the features and systems you build and ship directly shape the homeowner experience, in a collaborative engineering environment where you’ll grow alongside peers who are solving the same problems.

Your Responsibilities

• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code in Ruby on Rails
• Deliver stories, tasks, and full features from design through deployment
• Pair program with team members to solve problems and raise code quality
• Participate actively in Scrum ceremonies, including daily standups, sprint planning, and weekly retrospectives
• Collaborate with cross-functional team members to align technical work with product goals
• Bring subject-matter expertise to your team, helping guide peers through complex technical problems

Success in This Role

In your first 6–12 months at Kin, success is less about checking boxes and more about the impact you create. You’ll use your skills and judgment to take ownership of meaningful work, improve how we operate, and help move Kin’s mission forward. Along the way, you’ll deliver outcomes that make a real difference for both Kinfolk and the homeowners we serve.

• By the end of your first year, you should feel confident in your role, trusted as an owner, and proud of the progress you’ve helped make.
• You’ve shipped multiple stories and features independently, from design through deployment, with minimal rework
• Your team relies on you as a go-to resource for technical problems within your area
• Code you’ve written and reviewed reflects consistently strong engineering practices across the team
• You’re trusted to take on ambiguous tasks and move them forward without close supervision

What You’ll Bring

Core Experience & Technical Skills

• Track record of shipping small to medium size software projects
• Proficiency coding in Ruby, JavaScript, or TypeScript
• Experience operating within Agile/Scrum development environments

Working Style & Environment

• Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment with evolving priorities
• A fast learner, ready to bring prior experience to this role and continue developing on the job
• Located in Central or Eastern US time zones (CST or EST) strongly preferred
