Company: Confidential

Location: US or Canada

Work Configuration: Fully Remote

Company Overview:

Our client is a proud, fully independent game development studio that operates remotely across North America. They maintain a global presence, reflecting their commitment to entertaining a global audience of 3 billion+ players.

They are an organization built on the belief that games are the best medium to provide fun, escape, and social connection. They prioritize authentic leadership, real conversations, continuous learning, and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset where everyone is empowered to be a game-maker. They avoid big company politics to focus on their best work.

The studio was founded by industry veterans who had previously collaborated for years at a major technology company. They have grown carefully, are now at over 75+ people, and are rapidly expanding due to their strong industry reputation.

Role Overview:

The client is looking for a Senior Technical Designer to be an integral part of their development team. In this role, you will be crucial in driving products to completion, focusing heavily on prototyping, balancing, and documentation for a new internally developed AAA title.

You will be expected to own features and drive quality experiences. This position requires deep experience in Unreal Engine, including heavy proficiency in Blueprint, with the capability to also utilize C++ for implementation.

You will collaborate closely with the Tech Design Director, a leader with over two decades of experience who has shipped multiple acclaimed AAA games and defined new gameplay paradigms in new mediums (such as motion control and spatial computing).

This is a 6-month contract role with strong potential for conversion to a full-time, permanent position based on the success of the prototype phase.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive and implement gameplay systems, collaborating closely with artists, animators, and programmers to ensure an excellent player experience.
  • Implement a variety of prototype systems primarily using Blueprint, with the ability to step into C++ as needed.
  • Design complex features in collaboration with programmers, game designers, and other development teams.
  • Create detailed and easy-to-use project documentation for features and systems.
  • Proactively identify workflow issues, technical dependencies, and offer creative, implementable solutions.
  • Attend playtest sessions, actively gather feedback, and be highly solution-oriented to address encountered problems and bugs.
  • Balance and tune multiple game elements and features throughout the prototyping and production cycles.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional game development experience as a Technical Designer.
  • Must have shipped at least two AAA or high-end AA games on PC or console.
  • Heavy experience in Unreal Engine, demonstrating the ability to jump into many aspects of the engine, particularly during rapid prototyping.
  • Exceptional proficiency in Blueprint visual scripting.
  • Ability to create detailed, clear, and actionable design documentation.
  • Proven experience in prototyping multiple game features simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and formal thinking, able to break problems down into key variables and identify the relations between them.
  • Capability to process, understand, and implement complex feedback effectively.
  • Experience working with scripting languages or visual scripting systems.
  • Comfort in source control systems such as Perforce or Git.
  • Written and spoken English fluency.
  • Cleared to work and located in the United States or Canada.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • A portfolio of work where you are ready to discuss your specific contributions and design reasoning.
  • Additional side skills in Programming (C++), Art, Audio, Writing, or other gaming-related disciplines.
  • Experience with other game engines (e.g., Unity).

Compensation:

The typical salary range for this position in the US is between $100,000 and $135,000 USD, and in Canada is between $125,000 and $169,000 CAD. The final agreed-upon salary may vary depending on factors such as location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The client works hard to offer competitive salaries regardless of location. The compensation package includes:
  • Industry-leading healthcare, dental, vision, life, and AD&D benefits.
  • Comprehensive parental leave benefits.
  • Discretionary bonus opportunities.
  • 401(k) with matching.
  • Flexible time-off policy.
  • 10 days of accrued paid time-off, increased to 15 days after three years of employment.
  • 14 paid Client-observed holidays annually.
  • 2.5 paid floating holidays annually (prorated).
