[Hiring] Senior Java / React Full Stack Engineer @Abstra

Role Description

As a Senior Java React Fullstack Software Engineer, you will own features end-to-end, from backend microservices through the user interface. You will make architecture and technology decisions that other engineers build on, working confidently across the stack from data model to UI.

You will work within a modern Java/Spring Boot microservices backend and a Next.js/React frontend, deployed on AWS. We build AI directly into our products and expect engineers to use AI coding tools to accelerate development, always with sound engineering judgment and validation. You will collaborate daily with US-based engineering leadership in English and Spanish-speaking business stakeholders across Latin America.

Location: Latin America - 100% Remote. Working hours should overlap with U.S. business hours.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 6+ years of professional software development experience across both backend and frontend.
• Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
• Hands-on experience with a statically typed backend language (Java strongly preferred) and a relational database (e.g., PostgreSQL).
• Hands-on experience building production UI with React and TypeScript (Tailwind, TanStack Query).
• Production experience designing and operating microservices-based, distributed systems.
• Experience using an AI coding tool (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) to accelerate development.
• Experience with Git-based source control and collaborative code review (e.g., GitHub).
• Comfort working from the command line in a Linux/Unix environment.
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading a small technical team.
• Professional working proficiency in English, spoken and written, sufficient for daily collaboration with a US-based team.
• Experience with Java 21, Spring Boot 3, and Next.js.
• Experience with gRPC/Protobuf or another contract-first service design approach is a plus.
• Experience with event-driven architecture and a message broker (e.g., Kafka) is a plus.
• Experience deploying and operating services on AWS is a plus.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., AWS CDK, Terraform) is a plus.
• Experience designing AI-powered product features (semantic search, vector databases, prompt/instruction design, testing non-deterministic systems) is a plus.
• Experience in HR technology, marketplace platforms, or other SaaS products is a plus.
• Prior experience working directly with a US-based team or client is a plus.

Requirements

• Own features end-to-end, from backend service design through the user interface, from technical design through production.
• Build and maintain backend services in Java 21 / Spring Boot 3, exposing internal APIs via gRPC/Protobuf and, where appropriate, REST.
• Build user-facing features in React/Next.js (TypeScript), integrating cleanly with backend APIs and following established frontend patterns.
• Design and evolve relational data models in PostgreSQL, including schema migrations and query performance tuning.
• Build event-driven features using Kafka where appropriate.
• Make architecture decisions, service boundaries, API contracts, data models, and UI/state patterns, that other engineers build on.
• Monitor and operate your services on AWS, following infrastructure patterns established by the DevOps team.
• Use AI coding tools to accelerate day-to-day development, applying strong engineering judgment to validate, test, and, when necessary, override AI-generated output.
• Write automated tests across the stack (backend unit/integration, frontend component/end-to-end) and enforce quality through code review.
• Mentor other engineers and help set technical standards across both backend and frontend.
• Partner with product, customer support, and US-based leadership to translate business requirements, often communicated by Spanish-speaking stakeholders, into shipped features.
