[Hiring] Open Source Contributor @24-MAG

YDay - 24-MAG is hiring a remote Open Source Contributor. πŸ’Έ Salary: $100–$150/hour πŸ“Location: Worldwide

Role Description

We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced open-source software engineers with strong expertise in repository exploration, debugging, system architecture, code review, software testing, and multi-language development to contribute to an advanced AI training and software-engineering evaluation project.

Selected professionals will create, solve, review, and validate challenging software-engineering tasks across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, infrastructure, and developer-tooling environments. The work requires demonstrated open-source engineering contributions, the ability to understand unfamiliar repositories quickly, and strong judgement when evaluating code correctness, security, maintainability, and architectural fit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Open-Source Repository Analysis
    • Explore and understand unfamiliar software repositories
    • Identify project structure, dependencies, architecture, and contribution patterns
    • Trace relationships between modules, services, libraries, and interfaces
    • Review existing issues, pull requests, and implementation conventions
    • Develop accurate technical understanding before making changes
  • Software Development & Modification
    • Implement new functionality within existing codebases
    • Modify front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, or infrastructure components
    • Work within established architectural and coding conventions
    • Produce maintainable changes appropriate to the host project
    • Validate behaviour across affected components
  • Debugging & Root-Cause Analysis
    • Reproduce reported software issues
    • Trace execution and data flow through complex systems
    • Identify underlying technical causes
    • Distinguish symptoms from root problems
    • Develop targeted and technically sound fixes
  • Cross-System Reasoning
    • Trace data across interfaces, services, APIs, libraries, databases, and external dependencies
    • Analyse interactions between system components
    • Identify integration failures or behavioural inconsistencies
    • Evaluate downstream effects of code changes
    • Reason across multiple layers of a software stack
  • Multi-Language Engineering
    • Work across repositories written in different programming languages
    • Translate software builds or implementations from one language to another where required
    • Preserve intended behaviour and architectural constraints during translation
    • Adapt to language-specific tooling and conventions
    • Compare implementation strategies across languages
  • Testing & Validation
    • Write unit tests
    • Develop integration and regression tests
    • Create end-to-end tests where appropriate
    • Validate fixes against original failure conditions
    • Ensure changes do not introduce unintended regressions
  • AI-Generated Code Review
    • Review AI-generated patches for correctness
    • Assess implementation completeness
    • Identify security or maintainability issues
    • Evaluate whether proposed changes fit the repository architecture
    • Provide structured feedback on technical quality
  • Architecture & Maintainability Review
    • Assess whether code changes align with project architecture
    • Identify unnecessarily complex or fragile implementations
    • Evaluate maintainability and long-term technical impact
    • Recommend cleaner or more appropriate approaches
    • Maintain high standards for software quality
  • Open-Source Contribution Verification
    • Discuss specific repositories, pull requests, issues, and code personally authored
    • Demonstrate substantive engineering contributions
    • Distinguish meaningful code ownership from minor documentation or formatting changes
    • Provide evidence of technical depth through verifiable contribution history
    • Explain design and implementation decisions from prior open-source work
  • Technical Collaboration
    • Communicate technical reasoning clearly
    • Review and respond to feedback
    • Collaborate remotely with other engineers and project stakeholders
    • Document important implementation and validation decisions
    • Support consistent engineering standards across project tasks

Qualifications

  • Public or otherwise verifiable GitHub profile
  • Meaningful ownership of or contributions to one or more open-source repositories
  • Demonstrated software-engineering experience across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, developer tooling, infrastructure, or another substantial technical area
  • Strong ability to understand and modify unfamiliar codebases
  • Experience debugging complex software systems
  • Strong repository-navigation and code-review skills
  • Experience with multiple programming languages
  • Relevant languages may include TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust, C++, C#, Ruby, PHP, or comparable technologies
  • Strong testing and validation skills
  • Ability to write unit, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests
  • Strong understanding of maintainable software architecture
  • Ability to evaluate code for correctness, security, and maintainability
  • Experience translating implementations between programming languages is valuable
  • Candidates should be prepared to discuss specific repositories, issues, pull requests, and code they personally authored
  • Contributions consisting only of documentation edits, dependency updates, formatting changes, or minor typo corrections are unlikely to demonstrate the required engineering depth

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote and open globally
  • Expected commitment: approximately 15 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule; contributors choose their working hours and days, including weekends if preferred
  • Displayed compensation range: $100–$150/hour
  • Actual compensation structure is output-based, with payment made per task that meets project specifications
  • Task completion time may vary depending on individual experience and workflow
  • Minimum weekly submission requirements apply; the source does not specify the exact number of required tasks
  • Work will involve open-source repositories, software development, debugging, architecture analysis, testing, code translation, and AI-generated patch evaluation
  • Strong, verifiable open-source engineering experience is central to this engagement
  • Roles are typically filled within approximately 48 hours
  • Selected experts are expected to begin initial tasks within approximately 24–48 hours after onboarding
  • Project scope, repositories, languages, technical tasks, and evaluation standards may evolve depending on project requirements
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, private repository, software organisation, or other third party
