Role Overview:
The client is seeking a highly experienced Lead Unreal Engineer to join their team and lead the development of a new internally developed AAA title.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you will direct the design, scheduling, and implementation of core game systems, driving quality experiences from prototype to polished production state. You will be responsible for setting up the engineering team and the project for success by establishing processes and providing mentorship.
You will partner closely with a Tech Design Director who has over 20 years of experience, having shipped titles like Gears of War 2/3, and contributed to defining new gameplay paradigms for new mediums like Kinect and HoloLens. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Unreal and C++, a proven ability to lead and mentor developers, and a sharp understanding of the trade-offs between performance, flexibility, and implementation effort.
This is a 6-month contract role with strong potential for conversion to a full-time, permanent position based on the success of the prototype phase.
Responsibilities:
- Lead game development efforts in Unreal Engine, including supporting pipelines, across all aspects of the development cycle (planning, design, implementation, documentation, maintenance).
- Structure the overall game architecture and personally implement core systems for gameplay features, tooling, UI systems, and localization as needed, particularly in the first 6 months of prototyping.
- Take ownership of features and systems, driving them from prototype to a highly polished, production-ready state, and acting as the technical expert.
- Improve code and processes by constantly following coding standards, writing clean, performant code, and making suggestions to raise the bar.
- Assist in performance tuning, balancing improvements, automation, and usability enhancements.
- Create detailed and accurate estimates to ensure predictable development schedules.
- Identify team technical needs, participate in the interview process, and lead code reviews.
- Mentor junior programmers on the team.
- Produce prototypes of gameplay ideas and features and document development processes.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience in game development as a software engineer or equivalent, working collaboratively across technical and non-technical disciplines.
- Must have shipped at least one full AA/AAA game as a developer.
- Exceptional knowledge of Unreal Engine and fluency in C++.
- Strong fundamental skills in architecture, development, and debugging.
- Solid understanding of design patterns and data structures.
- Strong analytical and formal thinking, with the ability to break down complex problems and identify key variables.
- Proven experience and comfort with detailed and accurate project planning and setting development processes.
- Experience in managing and leading other developers and/or small engineering teams.
- Ability to offer mentorship and guidance to more junior developers.
- Proficiency in source control systems such as Perforce or Git.
- Written and spoken English fluency.
- Cleared to work and located in the United States or Canada.
Bonus Qualifications:
- Proficiency with other development languages (e.g., C/C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python).
- Mobile or web development experience.
- Game development experience in Unity or other game engines.
- Shipped a game on consoles.
- Familiarity with AI coding assistants such as Claude.
Compensation:
The typical salary range for this position is:
- Up to $135K USD for US-based candidates.
- $110K - $265K CAD for Canada-based candidates.
The final agreed-upon salary is based on work location and may vary depending on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
