Role Description

The role of the IBM Z Technical Specialist is to work with the IBM mainframe teams and must have strong technical expertise and eagerness to work with new technology and infrastructure. You must have worked on several large complex projects in an architectural role designing and implementing technical solutions to commercial problems.

Mainframe Network Technician will be responsible for:

• Installing, customizing, and maintaining the operating system as well as the install and/or upgrade of other system products that operate on the mainframe.
• Overseeing the deployment, planning, configuration & testing.
• Managing the Mainframe Network processes which includes:
• Configuring and working with hardware engineers with the setup of the mainframe processors and storage related equipment.
• Installing, upgrading and supporting the z/OS operating system and other supporting ISV products particularly from the vendors; IBM and Computer Associates (CA).
• Providing off hours support for the implementation of software changes and support for other projects requiring software expertise as well as being part of an on-call rota.
• Providing production support to address any system-related issues, including incident and problem management.
• Planning hardware and software system upgrade and configuration management.
• Deploying automation to support operations on the system.
• Working closely with capacity planning to ensure the workload is well managed and load balancing is achieved.
• Providing monitoring and operability to detect and control any processing anomalies or system errors.
• Installing and maintaining security products and network protocol products.
• Assisting application programmers on any processing concerns or products which they utilize within their toolbox.
• Determining problems when debugging system software and opening APARs with vendors.
• Supporting role swap activities to ensure a high level of resiliency of the systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline preferred.
• 8-12 years of relevant work experience.
• Strong overall technical leadership skills.
• MVS Systems Knowledge.

Requirements

• Extended technical expertise with z/OS, SMP/E, TSO/ISPF, USS, SDSF and JCL.
• Knowledge of IBM and Broadcom / BMC Products.
• Excellent problem determination skills and ability to work independently.
• Proficient in Security software tools: RACF and ACF2.
• Performance monitoring using Omegamon, RMF, SMF and SAS.
• Network Systems Programming experience would be optimal.
• Set and achieved challenging short, medium and long term goals which exceed the standards in their field.
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills; ability to communicate complex information meaningfully.
• Built effective networks across business areas, developing relationships based on mutual trust.
• Experience of creating and deploying comprehensive business/operating plans.
• Comprehensive understanding of risk management and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory processes.
