Role Description

Azumo builds and operates production AI systems for companies ranging from seed-stage startups to Meta. We are hiring a Data Engineer to own the layer everything else depends on: ingestion and transformation pipelines, storage and warehouse design, and the retrieval infrastructure that AI systems query. The role is fully remote across Latin America, aligned to your client's working day.

Where this role sits:

• You are the engineer the client works with, often the only one, sitting inside their team, with their repository, constraints, and deadlines.
• Your lane defines what you build: software, data pipelines, models, or AI systems in production.
• This role defines how you are accountable for it.
• As the technical lead, you are responsible for anything that does not work as expected.

What you will build:

• The whole thing: discovery, design, build, verification, release, and the incident afterwards.
• The work nobody assigns, including unclaimed tasks.
• Saying no to the client directly, providing reasons and alternatives.
• Verification of acceptance criteria without a testing phase behind you.
• Reproducible delivery, run with agents, with specification and tests first.
• Work inside the client's environment, including their repositories and standups.

How we work:

• Our engineers build with AI every day, using tools like Claude Code and Codex.
• An automated audit runs across the codebase daily, grading security, cost, and architecture findings.
• We stay vendor-neutral across OpenAI, Anthropic, and open-weight models.
• We run Valkyrie, our own production layer, for a single interface to any model.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and shipping production software, with depth in at least one of our four lanes: product software, data pipelines and retrieval, modeling and applied AI, or AI systems in production.
• Experience as the only engineer on an engagement, or the first one on a new client.
• A track record of delivering inside someone else's environment without supervision.
• Direct client-facing experience, including scoping work and pushing back on requests.
• End-to-end ownership of at least one system in production, including incidents.
• Daily delivery work with AI coding agents, beyond autocomplete.
• Cloud deployment experience on Azure or AWS, with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
• English at C1/C2 level.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working depth in a second lane.
• Delivery under a compliance regime such as SOC 2 or HIPAA.
• Consulting, agency, or client-services background.
• Contributions to open-source projects or published technical writing.
