Role Description

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking an "Everything Engineer" with a Backend focus to modernize a mission-critical legacy system managing billions of dollars in international security cooperation.

The Project involves modernizing a legacy system that manages foreign military sales cases for the U.S. government, which is the system of record behind billions of dollars in international security cooperation. The legacy platform is a decades-old fat-client application with:

• Hundreds of screens
• Millions of lines of Java code
• Hundreds of thousands of lines of stored-procedure logic
• Hundreds of reports
• A ton of batch processing

Our job is straightforward: replace the legacy system with a modern web platform through quick iterations, built on an Agentic AI Software Development Lifecycle.

What that means in practice:

• Decompose problems into specs precise enough for an agent to implement directly.
• Own everything you merge, as agent output is your output.
• Review rigorously with a focus on production software for a regulated federal financial system.
• Ship constantly with small reviewable changes and an always-green main branch.
• Work with the latest technology as part of your job.

As an "Everything Engineer," you will:

• Build across the whole stack (UI, API, database, infrastructure, pipeline).
• Own the heart of the rebuild: the domain model and services that replace decades of accumulated business logic.
• Engage in business-rule archaeology to extract and reimplement legacy system rules.
• Ensure financial-grade correctness with append-only audit trails and reproducible calculations.
• Rebuild file-based and API integrations with partner systems.

Qualifications

• Deep, wide technical background in web-based systems.
• Real, hands-on mileage with Codex and/or Claude Code (or equivalent).
• Intellectually curious and a tinkerer.
• Generous in sharing information and prioritizing team success.

Requirements

• US citizenship and eligibility for a US SECRET clearance.
• 7+ years building and operating production web systems.
• Strong track record in server-side and domain-model work.
• Hands-on experience with agentic AI development tools on real codebases.
• Fluency across cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and security fundamentals.
• Travel no more than once per quarter.

Benefits

• Salary range: $175,000 - $250,000 a year.
