Role Description

As a leader within Campbell’s Corporate Food Safety & Quality organization, the Director, Chemical Safety, Toxicology and Analytical Chemistry is responsible for providing enterprise leadership, strategy, technical governance, and subject matter expertise for chemical safety, food toxicology, ingredient safety, and analytical chemistry across Campbell’s commercialization, manufacturing network, laboratories and supply base.

This role serves as Campbell’s senior technical authority for:

  • Chemical hazard identification
  • Toxicological risk evaluation
  • Ingredient and packaging safety
  • Science-based decision-making

The position partners closely with:

  • R&D
  • Regulatory Affairs
  • Procurement
  • Supplier Quality
  • Operations
  • Legal
  • Packaging
  • Quality
  • External technical experts

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing the enterprise strategy for chemical safety and food toxicology.
  • Serving as the company’s subject matter expert for toxicological risk assessment.
  • Providing chemical safety review and approval for ingredients and food contact materials.
  • Partnering with internal and external laboratories to guide testing strategies.
  • Leading technical response for chemical safety incidents and regulatory requests.
  • Monitoring and evaluating evolving trends related to chemical safety.
  • Developing proactive risk mitigation plans and communication materials.
  • Representing Campbell’s in external scientific organizations and regulatory forums.
  • Building internal capability through training and education.
  • Establishing metrics and reporting mechanisms to monitor chemical safety risks.
  • Standardizing lab testing equipment and methods across the manufacturing network.
  • Evaluating complex scientific information for decision-making.
  • Providing rapid technical support for critical incidents and escalations.
  • Influencing senior leaders and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in food, beverage, consumer packaged goods, ingredient, packaging, or related technical environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership in chemical safety, food toxicology, ingredient risk assessment, analytical chemistry, and related disciplines.
  • Experience leading technical governance and regulatory matters.
  • Experience interfacing with FDA, USDA, EPA, and international regulatory bodies.
  • Experience participating in industry association panels and scientific working groups.
  • Experience with food manufacturing environments and supplier quality systems.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and analytical equipment.
  • Experience in managing and developing technical teams.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Toxicology, Food Science, Chemistry, or related discipline preferred.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Toxicology or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications or training in HACCP, PCQI, Lead Auditor, ASQ, Lean Six Sigma preferred.
  • Deep expertise in food-relevant chemical hazards.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. and global food regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of analytical chemistry methods and laboratory operations.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific information into practical recommendations.
  • Proven ability to anticipate business risks and develop proactive plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong program management and decision-making skills.

Compensation and Benefits

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between $170,200-$234,100. Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k, and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
