Role Description

The Field Director is a leadership and supervisory position, responsible for the strategic planning, management, and execution of Badger Youth Organizing / Badger Youth Action’s field program across targeted communities. This role oversees canvassing staff and volunteers who conduct door-to-door outreach, street team engagement, and community event organizing to build civic power among young people. The Field Director will lead the design of a targeted field strategy, manage teams, set voter contact goals, and ensure high-quality engagement across all activities leading up to the November election.

This role is for someone energized by talking to new people, passionate about civic power, and eager to turn everyday community spaces into sites of democratic participation. The strongest candidates will be bold, persistent, and deeply committed to meeting young people where they are, at their doors, on their blocks, and at the events they love.

Team Size & Scope: The Field Director will be responsible for the training and management of the following individuals:

  • 10 - 30 Community Canvassers conducting direct voter outreach
  • 2 - 5 Team Leads / Regional Organizers managing daily field operations
  • Seasonal staff and volunteers during peak campaigns and voter registration drives

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic planning and execution of the field organizing program
  • Coordinate, set goals and vision, and lead logistics for canvass launches, trainings, and field events
  • Coordinate with the State Director/Organizing Director to align field program with organizational goals
  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate performance, and supervise field staff and organizers
  • Oversee onboarding, training, and professional development for all field staff
  • Establish and track weekly and monthly voter contact goals
  • Manage turf distribution, canvassing schedules, and field deployment across multiple neighborhoods
  • Oversee field operations during peak periods, including seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Analyze outreach data and adjust strategies as needed
  • Manage voter contact goals that may range from 2,000–10,000+ conversations weekly
  • Ensure voter registration forms are completed accurately and submitted in compliance with regulations
  • Oversee timely data entry into VAN or other voter databases
  • Assist with managing field budgets, including staff stipends, outreach materials, and transportation
  • Work with communications staff to capture content for social media and digital storytelling

Team Development

  • Ensure staff have effective scripts, training materials, and organizing tools
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to staff
  • Attend and lead regular team meetings, trainings, and strategy sessions
  • Foster a positive, mission-driven team culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and growth

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, youth groups, faith institutions, and neighborhood leaders
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration at festivals, civic holidays, cultural events, and public gatherings
  • Support initiatives that center youth voices and community priorities

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in field organizing, canvassing, or campaign management
  • Strong manager who can recruit, train, and motivate teams to meet ambitious outreach goals
  • Experience with VAN or similar voter databases
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple teams, projects, and timelines
  • Comfortable working in dynamic community settings (neighborhoods, festivals, public events)
  • Deep commitment to civic engagement, youth empowerment, and building political power
  • Solutions-oriented, adaptable, and able to problem-solve in the field
  • Reliable transportation or ability to travel regularly to field sites
