[Hiring] Senior Product Manager @Portless

Role Description

Every package Portless ships crosses a border, and every one of them carries a set of compliance obligations: how the product is classified, what value is declared, what duties and taxes apply, and what each destination market requires. Today that gets done through a mix of partners, internal tooling, and manual work, and it holds together well enough that merchants ship. That's the problem. "Well enough" is not a product, and it isn't a moat.

Compliance should be one of the strongest reasons a brand chooses Portless over anyone else. Getting there requires someone who can look at the whole flow end to end, decide what we own versus what we source from the market, and build a coherent system out of what is currently a set of individually reasonable decisions. We're hiring a Senior Product Manager to own that.

What you'll own

• The end-to-end compliance flow, from merchant catalog to cleared shipment.
• The strategy, and the case for it, including what Portless owns, what we buy, and what we partner for.
• Data quality as a product outcome, treating classification coverage and accuracy as tracked metrics.
• Prevention over cleanup, including mechanisms that stop non-compliant SKUs from becoming stuck shipments.
• The merchant-facing product, focusing on how compliance shows up in the portal and how merchants understand their exposure.
• Partner strategy and integration, evaluating market options and owning relationships from the product side.

What success looks like

First 90 days

• Understand the full flow, including parts in ops and CS, and explain where every input comes from.
• A written point of view on build versus buy versus partner, ready to be argued with.
• Quantify the top compliance risks in orders and dollars.

First 6 months

• A compliance strategy aligned with the company, with a roadmap behind it.
• Data quality tracked as a metric that is measurably improving.
• Meaningful manual work removed from ops and CS.
• Merchants can see and act on their own compliance status.
• Compliance is something sales can sell.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in product management with real ownership of a complex, data-heavy domain.
• Fluency in data, checking claims against actual outcomes.
• Experience making build-versus-buy calls and living with the consequences.
• Strong writing skills for strategy, decision docs, and specs.
• Ability to hold a position under pressure and adapt based on evidence.

Requirements

• Experience in cross-border commerce, logistics, fulfillment, or supply chain.
• Strategic level understanding of compliance, including classification, declared value, duties, and destination requirements.
• Not a customs specialist; need enough fluency to be credible with partners and experts.

• Work off one canonical roadmap alongside the rest of product.
• Partner cross-functionally by default.
• Look for systemic versions of problems.

• Not a trade counsel role; you are not our lawyer.
• Not a compliance analyst role; you are building the system that makes manual auditing unnecessary.
• Not a single-feature role; the scope is the whole flow.
