Role Description

The Donor Allocation Transplant Coordinator has responsibility for taking organ call for the transplant programs. This call includes all aspects of call-related duties assigned including:

• Reviewing deceased donor organ offers when organs become available to transplant candidates for all organs.
• Triaging patient calls for the transplant programs.
• Facilitating acceptance or refusal of donor organs for transplant.
• Coordinating the organ recovery with the transplant surgeons, Organ and Tissue Donation Team, Histocompatibility lab, Inpatient Units, and Operating room.
• Communicating effectively and sensitively with patients receiving the organs.

The Donor Allocation Transplant Coordinator must be able to spend the majority of his/her time executing complex logistical support pertaining to all aspects of organ recovery and placement. The coordinator provides 24/7 coverage on a rotating schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. This is a home-based position that may require on-campus meetings and trainings.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• Four (4) years nursing experience.
• Active RN Licensure.
• Ability to obtain National Certification.
• BLS Certification.
• Sound knowledge base of UNOS policy and CMS regulatory requirements in relation to organ allocation, waitlist management as well as ongoing patient status updating.

Requirements

• BSN preferred.
• Critical/acute care and/or experience in at least one of the following: end stage organ disease or solid organ transplantation.
• CCTC preferred.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competence in the care of people with renal, hepatic, cardiac, and respiratory failure, diabetes, cardiopulmonary disease, hypertension, and other disorders related to transplantation.
• Provides input to leadership in the standardization of training and procedures related to call support and after-hours organ allocation processes.
• Develops education and training modules for on-site call nurses, and provides related training and coaching to ensure proficiency in call support amongst all call nurses.
• Functions as liaison between OPO’s (organ procurement organizations), HLA Lab, and Transplant Department programs and staff.
• Actively partners with the Transplant Quality Manager to ensure knowledge and compliance of policy changes and updates.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
