Role Description

A Pediatric Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing assessments, determining the appropriateness of service, and providing direct treatment services. Must also complete paperwork and provide case management functions as needed.

Essential Functions

• Conducts diagnostic assessments and determines patient appropriateness for service.
• Conducts intensive individual counseling sessions with patients on a one-to-one basis.
• Provides written documentation of patient activity, develops treatment plans, and maintains compliance with required standards.
• Provides input to the treatment team regarding the development of treatment plans and patient progress.
• Provides case management services, such as community linkage and development of resources for patients.
• Ensures all services rendered are managed legally and ethically.
• Implements and upholds all policies of the organization.
• Ensures operations are performed within accreditation standards and corporate policy.
• Completes periodic competency testing and ensures adequate training.
• Ensures a safe environment for patients and employees through adherence to safety policies.

• Resolves conflicts and ensures that all employees perform their duties consistently.
• Develops and maintains positive working relationships with staff throughout the organization.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provides ongoing therapy to children, adolescents, and young adults.
• Conducts psychological, cognitive, and educational evaluations.
• Provides feedback to multidisciplinary staff and families.
• Participates in consultation and collaborative meetings with other professionals.
• Complies with state and federal drug laws.
• Maintains accurate records and studies existing and new legislation.
• Adheres to infection-control protocols.
• Demonstrates understanding of confidentiality in performing tasks.
• Positively represents the program through appropriate interaction and attitude.
• Collects information from clients/community.
• Participates in scheduled care team huddles for pre-visit planning.
• Maintains patient confidentiality as required by 42 CFR and HIPAA.
• Uses electronic health records to document care.
• Works closely with Occupational and Speech Therapy for collaborative services.
• Participates in the development of an assessment-based interdisciplinary treatment plan.
• Administers and scores developmental testing assessments.
• Conducts IQ testing.
• Provides education and resources for patients and families.
• Acts as a liaison with patients, families, and community support workers.
• Facilitates referrals to appropriate resources when necessary.
• Participates in continuing professional education and departmental meetings.

Secondary Functions

• Perform any other duties as assigned.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
• Explain to patients and families the roles and responsibilities of each team member.
• Remain fluent in terminology pertaining to a healthcare setting.
• Facilitate collaborative care by sharing relevant information.
• Assess the nature of the patient’s family and social support system.
• Ensure the flow and exchange of information among the patient and family members.
• Support patients in considering and accessing complementary services.
• Provide information, education, guidance, and support to family members.
• Establish and pursue individual and team-based improvement goals.
• Foster and value diversity in team composition.

Minimum Qualifications, Training, and Experience

• Active LISW licensure is preferred; LSW, LPC, LPCC considered.
• Prior counseling experience in outpatient or inpatient settings is preferred.
• Degree in Social Work or related field required.
• Prior experience working with the pediatric population is required.
• Maintains applicable agency training.
• Valid Ohio Motor Vehicle License required.
• Maintain CPR/First Aid training.
