Role Description
This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
Incumbent is responsible for the coordination of all activities associated with the patient data reporting and cancer registry requirements. Incumbent provides functional assistance for operations, analyzing work processes, identifying potential process improvements, monitoring efficiency, and reviewing the quality of data submitted to the VA Cancer Registry System (VACRS). Serves as a liaison for internal and external Cancer Program entities regarding VA patient data requirements. Serves as a required member on Cancer Committee to support initiatives with data when possible. Considered subject-matter expert on cancer registry database management.

Performs the regular duties of a Cancer Registry Coordinator by performing real-time case ascertainment reviewing all data sources.

Performs data curation by completing chart reviews, physician inquiry, collaborating with non-VA healthcare providers and other hospital personnel.

Performs lifetime annual follow-up for disease surveillance for patients including cancer status, vital status, and subsequent treatment regimens.

Prepares routine and special statistical reports, narratives, and graphic representations requiring use of registry data.

Assists with the development and implementation of Cancer Registry procedures to process, document, store, and retrieve cancer registry patient data.

Distributes a random sample of annual analytic patient diagnoses for physician review to ensure quality registry data.

Consults with managing physician(s) on complex diagnoses or unusual treatment plans.

Monitors in-house, multidisciplinary cancer conference agendas and/or provider notes summarizing presentation findings and recommendations.

Supports the Cancer Program with subject-matter expertise on Commission on Cancer (CoC) data requirements and standards.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

Experience: One year of experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology and general understanding of the health record.

Education: Two years above high school with a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to MRT work.

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.

English Language Proficiency: MRT (Cancer Registrar) candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard.
Requirements

Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-8.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and understanding of ACoS and/or facility requirements for administering, monitoring, and reporting compliance.

Ability to interpret data to set, evaluate, and adjust the cancer program and/or facility goals and objectives.

Ability to inform cancer registry staff on the technical components of the cancer database.
-
Ability to multitask.

Ability to communicate with individuals from various disciplines regarding the facility requirements of the cancer program.

Ability to analyze and interpret data for use in facility strategic planning.

Ability to develop cancer program/cancer registry policies and procedures.
