Role Description

The Special Accounts Officer is accountable for the control of delinquent and non-performing accounts in the retail and small business loan portfolio, to minimize potential losses to Beem Credit Union. The incumbent provides professional and individualized financial counseling and information to members regarding debt consolidation and work out arrangements and recommends and initiates legal proceedings on enforcement actions when necessary. Responsibilities also include providing guidance to branch staff and other internal partners on collections related matters to ensure adherence to policy and minimize risk to the Credit Union. This role is eligible for remote work arrangements within British Columbia.

What you’ll do:

  • Effective Collection & Recovery of Delinquent Accounts
    • Initiates and negotiates the collection of assigned overdue accounts.
    • Contacts members, cosigners, and guarantors to arrange payment solutions or recommend default management options that minimize risk to the Credit Union.
    • Reviews delinquency lists, analyzes account status, updates internal systems (banking system, CRM, collection software), and issues collection letters.
    • Remains informed on current fraud trends to mitigate risk when collecting delinquent accounts.
    • Identifies collection patterns and recommends changes to enhance risk management.
    • Performs skip tracing to locate members with overdue accounts.
    • Posts transfers from accounts for payments.
  • Financial Assessment & Member Engagement
    • Engages with members to discuss their financial situation and determine the best course of action.
    • Documents net worth statements, calculates debt service ratios, and ensures actions minimize potential write-offs.
    • Responds to member inquiries or disputes and resolves discrepancies related to balances, due dates, or other issues on delinquent accounts.
  • Legal & Insolvency Management
    • Assesses when legal action is required, refers to the Manager for approval, and initiates legal processes including foreclosures once approved.
    • Reviews documents submitted by Debtor Assistance programs and determines appropriate actions with the Manager.
    • Reviews Bankruptcy/Consumer Proposals for discrepancies; may challenge proposals when appropriate.
    • Prepares and files Proof of Claim forms, attends creditors’ meetings, obtains releases of interest, and contests automatic discharges when necessary.
    • Liaises with realtors, lawyers, brokers, bailiffs, collection agencies, and other external partners.
    • Prepares timely and accurate monthly reports (e.g., NPL, Watchlist, CMHC, SAGEN, Charge-offs, CUMIS Insurance).
    • Ensures reporting reflects current statistics on file movement and loss provisions.
    • Performs other collections related duties as required or assigned.
  • Asset Repossession & Protection
    • Facilitates asset repossessions by locating and confirming ownership of the asset prior to seizure.
    • Researches and verifies client information; prepares documentation and instructions for bailiffs.
    • Acts on fire insurance cancellations by contacting members or arranging CUMIS insurance to protect mortgage interests.
  • Property Related Risk Management
    • Responds to municipal property tax sale notices, works with members on payment solutions, or takes action to protect Credit Union interests.
    • Responds to strata default notices, contacts members for payment, and takes actions to safeguard the Credit Union’s position.
  • Collaboration
    • Works with branch staff to find solutions and/or restructure deals on problem accounts.
    • Acts as a resource on collection policies and procedural updates.
    • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, across the organization to ensure consistency and alignment with business and strategic objectives.
    • Maintains strong collaborative relationships with external partners, agencies, and vendors to ensure the successful execution of initiatives.

Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of progressive experience in financial services or credit-related environment, preferably within lending, collections, or account management.
  • Strong knowledge of collections practices, skip-tracing procedures, Small Claims processes, and BC Collection Laws.
  • Foundational understanding of the Personal Property Security Act (PPSA), Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (BPCPA), and other regulations relevant to credit union lending operations.
  • Foundational knowledge of bankruptcy and consumer proposal processes and related claims.
  • Working knowledge of financial analysis techniques used to assess client financial conditions.
  • Solid understanding of default management tools, including CMHC and Sagen mortgage insurance policies.
  • Strong understanding of retail and small business lending processes, policies, and core financial products.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze and interpret data to support collection activities.
  • Post-secondary education in business, finance, accounting, lending, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Completion of CUIC 210, or active progress toward completing the course, would be considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Compensation

  • Annual salary range: $69,500 to $81,800.
