Role Description
As a
Senior Motor Fleet Underwriter
, you will take ownership of Wakam’s European commercial motor fleet portfolio, driving underwriting performance, strengthening broker and MGA relationships, and contributing to product and market strategy across several jurisdictions. You will act as a technical authority on fleet underwriting, combining risk selection, pricing discipline, market insight, and portfolio steering to ensure profitable and sustainable growth.
Responsibilities

Portfolio Underwriting & Risk Assessment:

Underwrite new business and renewals across commercial motor fleet segments, including PHV/taxi, delivery, leasing fleets, and other types of fleets.

Assess risk quality using exposure data, loss history, fleet management practices, driver profiles, and sector information.

Apply technical pricing models and rating tools to determine adequate premiums.
-
Negotiate terms with brokers and MGAs to achieve balanced outcomes on price, coverage, and conditions.

Manage quotes, binders, endorsements, and monitor in-force accounts for mid-term changes, fleet movements, and deterioration in claims performance.

Portfolio Management & Performance:

Monitor the combined operating ratio (COR) and loss ratio of the fleet portfolio regularly.

Identify trends and take corrective actions where needed.

Track performance by segment, geography, broker, vehicle type, and fleet size.

Contribute to quarterly portfolio reviews and management reporting.

Manage underperforming accounts through rate action, tighter coverage terms, or non-renewal decisions where appropriate.

Produce underwriting MI and data analysis to support portfolio steering.

Work closely with actuarial teams on pricing adequacy, experience reviews, and reserving discussions.

Pricing & Technical Development:

Contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of fleet pricing models, rating tools, underwriting guidelines, referral matrices, and appetite statements.

Incorporate market intelligence and claims experience into pricing assumptions.

Monitor external market conditions such as competitor pricing, capacity changes, and emerging risks.

Broker & Distribution Management:

Build and maintain strong relationships with specialist fleet brokers, Lloyd’s brokers, and MGA partners across Europe.

Lead broker meetings, scheme reviews, and renewal discussions.
-
Support the onboarding of new fleet schemes and delegated authority arrangements.

Represent Wakam in market discussions and industry forums.

European & Cross-Border Underwriting:

Underwrite cross-border fleet risks and multi-jurisdiction programmes.

Navigate local regulatory requirements, mandatory covers, and market practices across various countries.

Liaise with local contacts and MGAs where relevant.

Monitor macroeconomic and geopolitical factors that may impact portfolio performance.

Claims Collaboration, Fraud & Governance:

Work closely with claims teams on large or complex fleet losses.

Support claims reviews and identify fraud indicators and leakage patterns.
-
Contribute to wording reviews to ensure coverage remains robust and fit for purpose.

Operate within underwriting authorities and governance frameworks.
-
Maintain accurate records in underwriting systems and prepare submissions for internal committees.

Support audit and compliance processes across relevant markets.
Qualifications
-
Significant motor fleet underwriting experience, ideally within an insurer, Lloyd’s syndicate, or specialist MGA.
-
A proven track record managing fleet portfolios across multiple European markets.
-
Experience underwriting large and complex fleet accounts, including structures involving deductibles, captives, or self-insured elements.

Strong technical underwriting capabilities in risk assessment, pricing, coverage structuring, and portfolio steering.

Comfort interpreting loss runs, claims statistics, and actuarial analyses.

Strong command of tools such as Excel, and ideally Power BI or similar BI platforms.

Good understanding of reinsurance structures relevant to fleet business, such as XL, quota share, and aggregate covers.

Familiarity with European motor insurance regulation, including cross-border requirements and compulsory insurance frameworks.

Fluent English; an additional European language such as French, Spanish, German, Italian, or Dutch would be a strong plus.

A professional qualification such as ACII (or equivalent), or progress toward it, is preferred.
