[Hiring] Finance Editor @Sherman Portfolios

1wk ago - Sherman Portfolios is hiring a remote Finance Editor. πŸ’Έ Salary: unspecified πŸ“Location: USA

Role Description

We are standing up a consumer-facing content engine. Research goes in one end and publish-ready copy comes out the other, every day.

Right now nobody owns the middle of that. An analyst's read and a writer's draft show up, and there is no one whose job it is to turn them into one voice at one standard before the deadline hits.

Think about whoever edits Finimize. That person is not the market authority in the room. Their job is to make an analyst's work land with somebody reading on a phone, and to keep the voice the same in a daily note, an educational guide, or a marketing email.

Who you're writing for

  • A W-2 employee in his late forties with money to invest, who's either frozen or sitting with an advisor who does nothing for him.
  • He's smart, he's not a professional, and he's reading on his phone.

Where your authority stops

  • Sherman's research team owns the market view. Models, signals, macro read, all of it.
  • You never author or alter an original market call.
  • You edit for clarity, voice, structure, and compliance safety.
  • If a claim reads wrong to you, you push it back to the desk. You do not fix it yourself.
  • You will be telling people who know more about markets than you do that their draft isn't clear yet.

What crosses your desk

  • Daily: Short market note. Edited and cleared same day. Roughly 300 to 500 words.
  • Weekly: Week ahead or week in review. Ties the daily notes together. Roughly 700 to 900 words.
  • Monthly: Deeper research piece. Consumer-friendly but technical. Roughly 1,200 to 1,800 words.
  • Quarterly: The flagship. Positioning, what the system did and why. Roughly 2,000+ words.
  • Ongoing: Subject lines, headlines, landing page copy, in-product copy, lifecycle email.

The philosophy you'd be editing inside

Sherman is trend following and momentum. That has a few consequences for the writing.

  • We don't predict. We respond to what price is already doing, so copy that forecasts is off-brand and a compliance problem, and catching it is your job.
  • The system is the story, which means pundit voice gets cut wherever it creeps in.
  • Drawdowns are built into trend following, and we would rather name them than write around them, so protect the honest version when you find it.
  • A fair amount of this job is making "stay the course" read like a decision somebody made on purpose rather than a shrug.

What you own

  • Line and substantive editing on every consumer-facing piece, to publish-ready, on schedule.
  • One consistent voice across every cadence, channel, and surface.
  • The style guide. Writing it, enforcing it, revising it when reality disagrees with it.
  • The editorial calendar and the handoff protocol between the research desk and the writers.
  • Headlines and subject lines, including the final call on them.
  • Pushing weak or non-compliant claims back to the desk before compliance ever sees them.
  • Getting copy through compliance in one round.
  • Briefing and developing the freelance writers who file into you.

What you don't own

  • The market view or any investment recommendation.
  • Design, layout, or email send mechanics.
  • Paid media, distribution strategy, or channel management.
  • Anything that touches Sherman's advisor-facing products.
  • Headcount decisions or contracts.

What a week looks like

The work is async and deadline-driven. You manage your own time and hit dates without anyone chasing you. Daily copy has a same-day window, so this isn't a role you can batch on Friday afternoon.

Must-haves

  • 5+ years editing professionally, with published finance or markets work you edited rather than wrote.
  • Proof you can take a technical draft and make it readable without losing the substance. Before-and-after samples are the strongest thing you can send us.
  • Enough market fluency to interrogate an analyst, though you don't need to be one.
  • A track record of holding a daily or near-daily publishing rhythm.
  • Evidence you've owned a voice or style guide across more than one writer.
  • Comfortable telling a subject-matter expert their draft isn't clear yet.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior work inside a compliance or legal review process.
  • Familiarity with systematic, quantitative, or trend-following strategies.
  • Newsletter or consumer fintech background, especially at scale.
  • Experience building an editorial process from nothing.
  • SEO instinct for the evergreen pieces.

Disqualifiers

  • Portfolio is writing samples only, with no editing evidence.
  • Wants editorial authority over the market view.
  • Copyedits at the comma level but won't restructure a weak piece.
  • Can't or won't push back on the research desk.
  • No evidence of holding a recurring daily deadline.
