Role Description
The mission of the client service delivery team at SMX is to create and deploy innovative products to our federal customers. The CFO Control Tower Budget and Spend (BAS) solution is a planning and reporting solution pre‑built for the federal government and operating on SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC).
This is a unique and exciting leadership role that allows an experienced federal financial professional to leverage deep expertise in budgeting, planning processes, and team development to help build and implement our next-generation planning application.
We are seeking an energetic, strategic, and collaborative Federal Financial Team Lead to guide a functional team. You will provide leadership in solution development, serve as the liaison to the technical team to ensure functional requirements are realized in technical development, and ensure delivery excellence across project phases. This is a full-time position that is 100% remote and will require minimal travel <20% and requires a Public Trust clearance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Operate at the intersection of financial management, business processes, data analytics, and technology.

Provide day-to-day guidance and leadership to a team of three functional analysts.

Partner with government stakeholders to analyze complex financial and business processes, develop actionable insights, and support strategic decision-making through data-driven solutions.

Develop a comprehensive understanding of client business objectives, financial operations, and strategic priorities, and guide your team in aligning work to these outcomes.

Lead and mentor a team of 3, providing direction, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring consistent quality and adherence to best practices.

Oversee analysis and documentation of business processes, workflows, requirements, and organizational decision-making needs.

Facilitate workshops and collaborative sessions with stakeholders to understand existing budget formulation and execution processes, pain points, and solutions.

Recommend and champion process, technology, and data solutions that enhance operational efficiency and financial performance.

Review policies, system data structures, and operational procedures to assess impacts on business and financial processes.

Provide oversight and strategic guidance in the use of business intelligence and analytics tools to maximize the value of client data assets.

Guide clients in adopting solutions that improve operational effectiveness, reporting capabilities, and financial outcomes.

Collaborate across interdisciplinary teams to ensure business, data, and technology requirements are aligned and successfully delivered.

Ensure creation of quality documentation across all phases of SDLC (RTM, FDD, Design Documents, end user documentation, training guides, online help, etc.) including materials prepared for Congressional Justifications, RFIs, and budget exhibits, where applicable.

Oversee development of test plans, business use cases, and manage test execution at a team level.

Promote strong communication and coordination across project teams, ensuring deadlines, expectations, and priorities are clearly articulated and met.

Communicate new requirements or enhancement requests from the client back to the corporate solutions team for inclusion in future releases and product roadmaps.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Public Administration, or related field.

10+ years of experience in:
-
Federal financial management
-
Operations analysis or strategic planning
-
Expert-level understanding of the federal budget planning and execution lifecycle.

Experience leading functional teams or workstreams within federal financial environments.

Experience working with federal government financial data, including analysis, reconciliation, and exception handling.

Strong understanding of business process improvement methodologies.

Demonstrated analytical, problem‑solving, and critical‑thinking capabilities.

Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Ability to explain complex concepts and findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Proven experience working independently and collaboratively in a client-facing consulting environment.

Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Public Trust clearance or ability to obtain one.
Desired Skills & Experience

Experience deploying financial planning and/or Business Intelligence applications.

Salary
The proposed salary for this position is: $130,000 — $218,200 USD.
