Role Description
The Director Community Development Underwriting is responsible for overseeing loan underwriting functions and for the full lifecycle of new originations and guiding the restructuring and workout analysis for existing borrowers in alignment with the organizational risk appetite. The Director of Community Development Underwriting reports to the Head of Small Business and Community Development Credit within the Risk Team. This position manages a team of commercial underwriters to support Community Development Lending (CDL) originations and supports existing borrowers in the portfolio.
Essential Responsibilities

Loan Origination Production
-
Lead a team of underwriters to underwrite complex transactions by ensuring comprehensive analysis, eligibility and conformance with underwriting and credit guidelines.

Exercise sound independent judgement in evaluating transaction structure, risk/return considerations, policy exceptions, mitigants and overall creditworthiness.

Recommend appropriate strategies and guidance in collaboration with credit on risk mitigants, covenants, reserves, conditions and other structural guidance.

Serve as the primary interface for the underwriting processes, actively participate in deal discussions, and manage internal workflow and due diligence.

Leadership and Planning

Provide input to the CDL Origination and the Credit, Risk teams with strategic and tactical planning.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to recommend training topics and conduct training.

Conduct regular 1:1 meetings with direct reports to manage team performance and development activities.

Responsible for hirings and providing input on staffing needs for workforce development.

Partner with the portfolio and special assets teams to improve handoffs and coordination.

Participate in meetings with CDL originations and other stakeholders to represent underwriting functions.

Ensure good communication and sharing of information within the CDL loan origination team.

Collaborate with external partners on industry updates and best practices.

Lifecycle Credit Underwriting, Origination and Portfolio and Workout Management

Responsible for quality of underwriting of work products by the underwriting team.

Deliver technical support and oversee financial analysis for existing and distressed borrowers.

Review post-closing amendment memos and assess the quality of financial analysis.
-
Challenge assumptions and identify emerging risks in underwriting analyses.
-
Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver technical underwriting guidance.

Maintain compliance with appropriate application of credit and underwriting guidelines.
-
Apply experience with distressed and underperforming credits to new originations.

Use portfolio performance to identify underwriting trends and incorporate lessons learned.

Attend special assets and other portfolio risk meetings to deliver technical guidance.

Review credit memos and credit analysis to ensure thorough underwriting.

Provide underwriting support and backup for credit and amendment memos for Commercial Real Estate (CRE) loans.

Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulatory changes, and internal policies.

Underwriting Process Management and Data Integrity

Partner with technology on system design/automation and process mapping.

Assign and manage workload team in conjunction with Credit and CDL Originations management.

Provide guidance to originations and other teams on templates and documents.

Ensure team meets all established service level agreements and deadlines.

Serve as lead to update and maintain underwriting guidelines for approval.

Support credit and risk with special projects and input on credit guidelines.

Support Head of Small Business and Community Development with other functions.

Leverage workload management tools for appropriate coaching to CDL.
-
Provide input to stakeholders with developing new lending products.

Understand and support data integrity in accordance with organizational policies.
Qualifications

Bachelorβs degree or advanced degree in business or public administration, finance or related field preferred.

10 years of advanced commercial and community development lending underwriting and/or lending experience.

Demonstrated experience exercising credit judgment and making recommendations on complex transactions.

Prior leadership experience with a minimum of three (3) years managing direct reports.

Strong underwriting, credit risk management and impact area expertise.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Previous experience with Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) is a plus.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $118,536 β $182,000 and may be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive.

Structure A: $118,536 - $158,246 (All locations except Structures B and C)

Structure B: $131,707- $175,829 (Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Virginia (DMV); non-Bay Area California markets; and Massachusetts)

Structure C: $144,482- $182,000 (New York; New Jersey; and the California Bay Area)
