Role Description

The Controller role at Muddy Mat is not a "manage clean books" position. We are in the middle of a meaningful financial infrastructure upgrade, which includes:

• Transitioning from cash basis to accrual accounting.
• Migrating from QuickBooks Online to NetSuite.
• Preparing for a formal audit with a national CPA firm (BDO).

We need someone who has experience with cleanup projects and can own the process end to end.

What You'll Own

• Lead and execute our transition from cash basis to accrual accounting, including restating historical financials and rebuilding the chart of accounts.
• Own the migration from QuickBooks Online to NetSuite, partnering with our external NetSuite implementation consultant.
• Lead pre-audit book cleanup in direct coordination with BDO.
• Manage the formal audit process from start to finish.
• Oversee month-end and year-end close, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements.
• Manage all aspects of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
• Build and maintain a strong internal controls environment to safeguard company assets.
• Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the CEO and leadership team.
• Identify and implement process improvements as we build a finance function that can scale.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience transitioning a company from cash basis to accrual accounting.
• Hands-on experience with NetSuite; migration or implementation experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working directly with an external audit firm on audit preparation and execution.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or senior accounting role.
• CPA designation (or local equivalent) strongly preferred.
• Deep knowledge of US GAAP.

Requirements

• Prior experience at a Big 4 firm (Deloitte, PwC, Ernst & Young, or KPMG) in audit or tax — Philippines, Latin America, or Eastern Europe specifically.
• Experience in e-commerce, DTC, or consumer products — multi-channel revenue recognition is a plus.
• Prior experience migrating from QuickBooks Online to an ERP system.
