[Hiring] Assistant Controller @GrowthX AI

Role Description

We're hiring our first Assistant Controller to build and own the Accounting function at GrowthX. This is a 0-to-1 role: you're not inheriting a mature org, you're standing one up. You'll take the accounting infrastructure we have today — an outsourced bookkeeping firm, Campfire as our GL, and a lot of tribal knowledge walking out the door with our outgoing accounting lead — and turn it into a function that scales with the business and holds up under audit.

You'll report to the Head of Finance and own the integrity of our books end to end:

• Close
• Reporting
• AR/collections
• AP oversight
• Revenue recognition
• Systems and controls

We currently lean on an outsourced accounting firm for bookkeeping — that's a stopgap, not the target state. Part of the job is to bring that work in-house and lower our dependence on outside help as the function matures, which means you should expect to be hands-on with the actual work, not just reviewing someone else's. You'll build the process, controls, and documentation so the next hire doesn't have to reverse-engineer any of it from Slack threads.

GrowthX runs a hybrid model — subscription platform revenue alongside services revenue — so you'll work with revenue recognition that isn't a single, simple SaaS pattern. You'll also inherit real, live problems on day one:

• Aging AR
• Contract structures with opt-out windows
• Multi-state tax exposure
• Systems that don't yet talk to each other cleanly

We need someone who wants to fix that, not someone who needs it already fixed.

Qualifications

• Prior experience as a Controller, or as a strong Assistant Controller / Accounting Manager ready to run the function independently, ideally at a high-growth Series A SaaS company.
• Experience building or materially maturing an accounting function.
• Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue.
• AI-forward: daily use of AI tools for close, reconciliations, and reporting.
• Comfortable owning the close independently.
• Think like a business partner, understanding accounting and cash implications.
• Clear and direct communication skills.
• Self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity in a remote, async environment.

Requirements

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
• Prepare and ensure GAAP-compliant financial statements.
• Own AR and collections: invoicing, payment application, aging, and direct customer follow-up.
• Own AP oversight and vendor management.
• Work through complex accounting topics including ASC 606 revenue recognition.
• Own core finance systems — Campfire (GL/AR/AP), Carta (equity), and billing/payment stack.
• Own accounting processes, approval workflows, documentation, and internal controls.
• Review customer and vendor contracts for accounting implications.
• Own equity administration: option grant processing and cap table accuracy.
• Support treasury: cash positioning and forecasting cash needs.
• Own tax and compliance coordination with external advisors.
• Partner with People Ops on payroll accounting and compliance.
• Prepare monthly reporting packages for lenders and investors.
• Build the audit-readiness muscle.
