Role Description
Paxon Energy & Infrastructure Services is seeking an experienced, hands-on accounting professional to support our finance/accounting organization in a Lead Accountant / Assistant Controller capacity. This role is designed for a highly capable accounting professional with a strong foundation in close execution and day-to-day accounting operations. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while consistently delivering accurate and timely work under recurring deadlines. This position will play a key role in supporting financial statement integrity, maintaining disciplined accounting processes, and ensuring dependable execution across core accounting activities. This is a remote contract/fractional role anticipated to average approximately 25β40 hours per week, with the potential for future full-time consideration based on business needs.
Key Responsibilities

Financial Close & Reporting

Lead and execute monthly close activities, including accruals, journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.

Ensure financial statements are accurate, complete, and compliant with GAAP.

Maintain organized, well-supported workpapers and close documentation.

Identify, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies and variances proactively.

Support timely and reliable financial reporting processes.

Accounting Operations
-
Support day-to-day accounting activities across general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, and related accounting functions.

Maintain timely completion of recurring accounting responsibilities with strong attention to detail.

Manage workflow effectively in a high-volume environment while maintaining accuracy and consistency.

Support continuity across day-to-day accounting operations.

Process Discipline & Controls

Help strengthen consistency, organization, and accountability across accounting workflows.

Ensure reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation are complete and audit-ready.

Self-review work to identify issues early and minimize downstream corrections.

Contribute to process improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.

Systems & Operational Support
-
Develop a strong understanding of current accounting systems, workflows, and historical accounting practices.

Work within and support key platforms and processes, including:

Accounting ERP

Insurance-related accounting workflows
-
Accounts receivable and factoring processes

Project-based operational accounting environments
-
Help maintain stable accounting operations while supporting process consistency and execution improvement.

Communicate clearly and proactively regarding priorities, deadlines, risks, and status updates.

Manage multiple responsibilities and shifting priorities effectively.

Qualifications

Bachelorβs degree in Accounting

6+ years of progressive accounting experience

Strong understanding of GAAP and accrual-based accounting
-
Experience owning or heavily supporting month-end close
-
Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules
-
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet recurring deadlines

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
-
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Experience
-
Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint or similar ERP systems
-
Familiarity with factoring arrangements and A/R-driven cash flow environments
-
Experience within engineering, infrastructure, consulting, construction, or field services industries
-
Prior experience in a Lead Accountant, Senior Accountant, or Assistant Controller role

CPA or CPA-track preferred, but not required
Role Structure & Compensation

Remote contract/fractional role
-
Approximately 25β40 hours per week

Target hourly range: $65β$80/hour, depending on experience

This role is initially intended to be structured as an independent contractor (1099) engagement, with potential opportunity for future full-time consideration.
