Role Description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a substation Design Engineer for our Richmond, VA office. Successful applicants may work from any mutually acceptable remote location within the United States.

Be involved in projects with our Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.

This Opportunity provides technical assistance and guidance for:

  • Due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector.
  • Research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, as well as protection and control systems.
  • Generating accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding material, installations, components, and construction specifications.
  • Ensuring responsibilities are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data relating to substation components and equipment specifications.
  • Assist in reviewing third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
  • Perform professional electrical engineering work relating to the design of various diagrams and layouts.
  • Participate in incorporating future-ready techniques and various design requirements.
  • Support senior engineers with research and recommendations of fundamental components.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering and construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, and power distribution.
  • Prepare data and visualizations for interpretation or presentation of findings.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements and reporting.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work and ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on design and construction issues.
  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data obtained during field investigations.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in electrical engineering.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, and application to permitting and project work.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail and results orientation.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and manage multiple priorities.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing and design software.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Professional Engineer License.

Expected Salary (all locations): $78,600 - $135,000
