[Hiring] Senior Engineering Manager @Surfe

Role Description

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you are responsible for the delivery, quality, and growth of two engineering teams (~8–10 engineers) within Surfe’s product engineering organization. You will own the end-to-end execution of your teams:

• Standup's, sprint planning, grooming, capacity management, quality standards, and people development.
• Work cross-functionally with Product Managers and are accountable for how work is scoped, built, tested, and shipped.
• Transform delivery execution from reactive to predictable, implementing sustainable capacity planning, quality gates, and engineering processes that produce consistent results.
• Accountable for sprint completion rates, engineering quality metrics, team health, and the professional growth of every engineer on your teams.
• Bring deep technical credibility, review RFCs, challenge architecture decisions, and earn the respect of senior ICs.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in software engineering with at least 5-8 years managing engineering teams directly.
• Managed 10+ engineers, with dedicated Product Managers.
• Experience in scaling through chaos and transforming teams from ad-hoc execution to predictable delivery.
• Mastery of sprint mechanics, including capacity-based planning, velocity tracking, and sprint health metrics.
• Experience in performance management, including having hard conversations and coaching underperformers.
• Strong stakeholder communication skills, presenting status, risks, and trade-offs to leadership clearly.

Requirements

• Understanding of modern frontend patterns: component architecture, state management, rendering performance, SDKs, observability, RUM, and feature flags.
• Knowledge of service-oriented architecture, including decomposing monoliths, defining service boundaries, and designing API contracts.
• Familiarity with domain-driven design, thinking in bounded contexts, aggregates, and domain events.
• Experience in API design, including REST, event-driven, webhooks, versioning, pagination, error handling, and contract testing.
• Experience in building high-throughput backend services, understanding database design, caching strategies, and operational realities.
• Comfort discussing containerization, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure (AWS), and deployment strategies.
• Belief that quality is a system, not a wish, with experience in implementing testing standards and observability practices.
• Experience in running retrospectives that produce real change and tracking quality metrics for systematic improvement.
