Role Description

KWL is seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer (P.Eng.) with approximately 8–12 years of relevant experience in district energy and low-carbon thermal systems. This Ontario-based remote role is suited to an experienced engineer who is comfortable managing technical assignments independently while collaborating with KWL’s multidisciplinary Energy team. You will deliver practical, high-quality designs, communicate proactively, and build positive client relationships. You will also participate in business development activities and help KWL grow its client relationships and project opportunities in Ontario.

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver mechanical design for district energy, energy centres, and low-carbon thermal infrastructure projects, with responsibility for assigned technical scopes.
  • Organize and follow through on assigned work to agreed timelines; communicate progress and raise technical or schedule issues early.
  • Prepare and review mechanical calculations, equipment sizing, PFDs, P&IDs, system layouts, construction drawings, specifications, and tender packages.
  • Apply practical engineering knowledge of hydronic systems, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, controls, and district energy distribution piping.
  • Coordinate with civil, electrical, structural, controls, and other disciplines to develop practical, constructible solutions.
  • Meet confidently with existing and prospective clients, understand their needs, and develop strong professional relationships.
  • Actively participate in business development by identifying and pursuing opportunities, contributing to proposals, and helping secure new and repeat work, particularly in Ontario.
  • Work with project managers on scope, schedule, quality, and budget tracking.
  • Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Share knowledge with junior engineers and EITs as appropriate and collaborate effectively with colleagues across offices and time zones.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), registered with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Approximately 8–12 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably including consulting experience in district energy or related thermal infrastructure.
  • Solid working knowledge of hydronic systems, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, controls, and district energy distribution piping systems.
  • Ability to carry out technical assignments with limited day-to-day supervision, exercise sound judgment, and seek input when needed.
  • Dependable follow-through on commitments and deadlines, with clear communication about progress, issues, and support needs.
  • An organized and self-directed approach to remote work, while staying connected with project managers and technical colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal and client-facing skills, with demonstrated interest and ability in business development, building client relationships, and contributing to winning new work.
  • Willingness to travel for client meetings, field visits, and occasional team or project meetings; ability to conduct site visits appropriate to project conditions.
  • Must be physically able to conduct field visits commensurate with project work, including handling and operation of equipment, travel to remote areas, and outdoor site visits in all weather conditions.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with energy transfer stations (ETS) and/or central energy plants.
  • Experience with sewage heat recovery (SHR), ambient-temperature loops, heat pumps, or thermal energy storage.
  • Experience working with municipalities, utilities, or other infrastructure clients.
  • Experience contributing to successful proposals, winning new work, or developing repeat business through client relationships.
  • Experience providing construction support or commissioning services.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to work on award-winning district energy and low-carbon thermal projects and contribute to KWL’s presence in Ontario.
  • Ontario-based remote work with flexible scheduling and support from an experienced, collaborative multidisciplinary team.
  • Collaborative culture with strong technical mentorship and support.
  • Diverse project exposure across planning, design, and construction.
  • Clear pathways for career growth in both technical and project leadership roles.
  • Ability to create your own work schedule and flexibility for your workday in a hybrid work environment.
  • Competitive salary and a generous performance-based bonus.
  • An opportunity for share ownership upon meeting the eligibility criteria.

  • Employee and Family Assistance Program that offers 24/7 support for all employees and their family members.
  • Group Savings Matching Plan (GRSP/TFSA).
  • Annual Health & Wellness Allowance.
  • Opportunity to work remotely outside of Canada for a period of 30 calendar days per year.
  • Relocation support, if applicable, and the ability to work from any of our 5 offices.
  • Career Coaching program and continuous support for professional development and growth.
  • An employee-centric culture that includes sport participation, various team memberships, and team building activities.
  • Direct guidance from experienced teammates and opportunity to work with an award-winning team.
  • And more.
