[Hiring] Director, Electrical Engineering @Nscale

Role Description

The Director, Electrical Engineering – North America is a senior, hands-on leadership role that owns the electrical basis of design and engineering governance across Nscale's U.S. data center portfolio. You'll define MV/LV distribution architectures, electrical equipment strategy, and controls and monitoring interfaces for facilities purpose-built for high-density AI deployments.

• Set the electrical standards for rapid scaling while ensuring high availability and flexibility for future hardware generations.
• Lead electrical technical due diligence on greenfield, brownfield, and colocation opportunities.

What You'll be Doing

• Technical leadership and design ownership:
  • Lead concept, schematic, and detailed design reviews for new builds and expansions.
  • Establish and maintain electrical design standards and reference architectures for rapid deployment.
  • Ensure designs meet availability, maintainability, efficiency, and safety targets for high-density AI workloads.
  • Provide engineering support during procurement, submittals, RFIs, field changes, and issue resolution.
  • Lead reviews of short-circuit and arc flash studies, ensuring compliance with safety targets.
  • Implement lessons learned to improve reliability and drive innovation in power distribution.
• Vendor, consultant, and team leadership:
  • Select and manage architectural and engineering consultants throughout the design process.
  • Enforce quality and documentation standards through document issuance reviews.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure electrical systems meet business requirements.
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of engineers, focusing on hiring and career development.
• Colocation leasing support:
  • Lead electrical technical due diligence for potential colocation sites.
  • Review and validate landlord and operator documentation.
  • Define and negotiate electrical lease exhibits and technical schedules.
  • Evaluate fit for high-density AI workloads.
• Site acquisition support:
  • Support early-stage site screening by defining electrical utility and constructability requirements.
  • Lead electrical due diligence for greenfield and brownfield acquisitions.
  • Assess site constraints and risks affecting electrical design and delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, particularly in data center design.
• 3+ years of engineering leadership experience.
• Strong understanding of data center electrical systems and reliability concepts.
• Experience working with U.S. engineering firms and local code variations.
• Strong presence and decision-making capability in high-consequence scenarios.
• Pragmatic, risk-based leadership style suited to fast-paced environments.
• Ability to challenge delivery teams constructively while maintaining partnerships.

Nice to Have

• Experience designing for high-density AI or HPC deployments.
• Owner-side experience at a hyperscaler or data center developer.
• Experience with utility interconnection or behind-the-meter power solutions.
• Experience negotiating technical terms in colocation or wholesale data center leases.
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

Salary Range

$170,000 — $260,000 USD
