Role Description

As a Controls Engineer, you'll play a key role in deploying utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across North America, supporting projects from initial design through commissioning and long-term operation.

• Work closely with internal engineering teams, equipment vendors, EPCs, utilities, project developers, and customers.
• Ensure control systems are designed, integrated, and delivered successfully.
• Review control philosophies and validate network architectures.
• Troubleshoot communications and support commissioning activities.
• Make a direct impact on the future of renewable energy.

What You'll Be Doing as a Controls Engineer

• Review project contracts and vendor agreements for controls-related requirements.
• Review and validate project design packages, including:
  • Electrical drawings
  • Data flow diagrams
  • Network designs
  • Signal mappings (analog, Modbus, DNP3)
  • Electrical power models
  • Control narratives
• Maintain and organize technical documentation within SharePoint.
• Develop batch scripts and automation tools to streamline data collection.
• Serve as a key technical resource for customers, EPCs, utilities, and internal project teams.
• Troubleshoot network and communications issues within VPN-secured environments.
• Respond to customer and operator requests regarding system modifications.
• Support site commissioning activities and provide technical expertise for controls-related tasks.
• Ensure all activities comply with engineering standards and company policies.

Qualifications

• Educational background in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience with industrial control systems.
• Demonstrated experience with industrial communication protocols including Modbus, DNP3, and TCP/IP.
• Strong understanding of industrial networking, including IP addressing, subnetting, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and network communications.
• Experience with SCADA systems, plant control systems, or utility-scale automation.
• Experience with inverter-based resources (IBR) such as Battery Energy Storage Systems or solar technologies is considered an asset.
• Exposure to substations, protective relays, and transformers is preferred.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to travel up to 10–15% nationally and internationally.
