Role Description

Full-time faculty for the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) are highly qualified professionals with an earned doctorate in counselor education and supervision (CES), preferably from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program or have a related doctoral degree and have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. They are able to integrate pedagogical strategies into their Christian faith to disciple the next generation of Christian leaders in the counseling profession.

  • The primary role consists of teaching, conducting research, advising, and mentoring doctoral students, while exemplifying a servant-hearted leadership.
  • Teaching involves:
    • Delivering instruction
    • Curriculum development
    • Assessment of student learning outcomes
    • Program evaluation
  • Faculty will teach courses in an accelerated format with synchronous and asynchronous components.
  • Courses vary in duration, typically offered in seven and fourteen weeks.
  • Core courses are taught in a cohort model, designed for adult learners.
  • The PhD-CES program is a year-round program.
  • Faculty assume various roles in areas of scholarship and service, including:
    • Administrative responsibilities
    • Academic advising
    • Committee work
    • Professional scholarship and service to the program, university, profession, and the community
  • Clinical practice activities are performed apart from CCU assigned office hours.
  • The full-time faculty load is 18 credit hours of doctoral level courses, or 6 credits per semester.
  • PhD-CES faculty work on a 12-month basis.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision, preferably from a CACREP accredited program.
  • Clinical experience appropriate for graduate and doctoral level instruction.
  • Appropriate certification and/or licensure (e.g., LPC, LMHC) may be required to teach some courses.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated application of adult learning theory in the classroom.
  • Experience in teaching graduate-level courses.
  • A record of active scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications and presentations at professional conferences.
  • Knowledge of ethical standards of practice for professional counseling and counselor education and supervision.
  • Superior oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively within the CCU community.
  • Desire to be proficient in technological course assets and proficiency in appropriate Microsoft Office software.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in curriculum development and CACREP program accreditation.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring doctoral students on quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research projects.
  • Extensive experience in counselor supervision.
  • Leadership roles in professional counseling organizations.
  • Experience securing external research funding.

Key Job Duties

  • Contribute to CCU’s mission: Christ-centered higher education transforming students to impact the world with grace and truth.
  • Meet the expectations of the role of university faculty as defined in the CCU Faculty Handbook, the CAGS Faculty Handbook, and PhD-CES faculty job description.
  • Participate in faculty development opportunities and attend university events as assigned by the Dean.
  • Prepare and teach courses per CAGS standards and expectations.
  • Utilize Brightspace learning platform and other assigned technologies.
  • Assume the role of Subject Matter Expert (SME), which includes:
    • Developing, redeveloping, assessing, and revising text updates of doctoral level courses
    • Ensuring alignment with the PhD-CES Assessment Plan, CACREP standards, etc.
  • Assess, validate, and make recommendations for student learning and for the PhD-CES program, per PhD-CES Assessment Plan, to ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • Serve as the primary advisor or a committee member in students’ dissertation committees.
  • Actively participate with peers in the School of Counseling faculty meetings, committee work, course development, course/program evaluation, and ongoing work of the School of Counseling.
  • Serve as designated faculty mentor/advisor for assigned group of PhD-CES students.
  • Represent the PhD-CES program and the School of Counseling at assigned CAGS center location for students, student advisors, and other related faculty and staff.
  • Identify with the counseling profession through:
    • Sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations
    • Maintenance of certifications and/or licenses related to their counseling specialty area(s)
    • Evidence of sustained professional development and renewal activities related to counseling
    • Professional services and advocacy in counseling
    • Research and scholarly activity in counseling commensurate with their faculty role.
  • Develop annual Service, Practice, and/or Scholarship Plan to include a minimum of 20 hours of professional development activities per year.
  • Maintain clinical competency in their area of specialty practice.
  • Adhere to professional standards as established by state governing bodies, the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) best practices, and CACREP standards.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, you may be required to walk, stand, sit, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, speak with clarity, and have appropriate vision and hearing capabilities.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at the computer keyboard or workstation.
  • Faculty responsibilities frequently require extended hours in the work week including evenings and weekends.
  • Faculty office hours are defined in partnership with the Dean.
  • Colorado Christian University expects all faculty and staff to participate in activities and events that occur on the campus throughout the year.
