Role Description

Boston City Campus has a vacancy for an Academic and Quality Manager in the distance mode of provision for its practical modules in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) qualification. This position is based at the Stellenbosch academic head office.

Key Responsibilities

• Module Management:
  • Support, guide, provide oversight, monitor and quality assure the Educators’ facilitation of the learning and teaching of specifically allocated modules according to the syllabi congruent with the programme.
  • Ensure adherence to the published academic and operational calendars and timetables for each semester.
  • Facilitate the teaching and learning of specifically allocated modules according to the syllabi, congruent with the Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
  • Manage the Educators’ uploads of quality assured teaching, learning and assessment collateral to the learner management system.
  • Oversee the Educators’ responses to student queries via the learner management system, email, or telephonically.
  • Ensure timeous responses to student queries and appeals on the learner management and administrative systems.
• Student & Academic Staff Support:
  • Be committed and available to support students, educators and staff consistently and timeously.
  • Ensure that relevant Boston policies and procedures are accurately and consistently implemented.
• Teaching and Learning:
  • Ensure that the teaching, learning and assessment strategy for the module/s is aligned to the programme’s intentions and to the Institution’s pedagogical approach.
• Research Supervision:
  • Provide guidance and support to educators and oversee the Research Supervision process.
• Learning Material Development:
  • Responsible for the processes of timeous planning, briefing and variance monitoring of material development including quality assurance of the learning material produced.
• Administration:
  • Manage the grading and moderation of all assessment events by the educators/graders/moderators.
  • Regular meetings with the educators and programme co-ordinators on the modules for which you are responsible.
  • Administer grades after the completion of assessment events.
  • Provide relevant information as required to the programme coordinator.
• Quality Assurance and Moderation:
  • Coordinate/manage the internal and external moderation processes.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in internal developmental workshops.
  • Involvement in the syllabus and curriculum design, development and review process.
  • Provide analyses of data for the purpose of module evaluations.
  • Collect relevant data for module reviews and programme evaluations.
  • Complete module reviews at the conclusion of the module or as required.
  • Participate in the processes of programme evaluation and external reviews.
  • Ongoing monitoring and evaluation of each module’s performance.
  • Early identification of at-risk students and modules.
• Additional Responsibilities:
  • Provide intellectual leadership and take responsibility for line management.
  • Regular reporting to your direct and indirect line managers.
  • Regular attendance and participation in various committee meetings.
• Scholarly Activity:
  • Ongoing participation in and leading of scholarly activities.
• Community Engagement:
  • Ongoing participation in and leading of community engagement endeavours.
• General:
  • Any other reasonable duties as assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

• Master of Laws (LLM) degree.
• Admission as an attorney or advocate with at least 2 years' relevant professional experience.
• Experience teaching street law, legal practice or similar clinical/practical LLB modules.
• A Doctoral qualification (LLD or PhD) is advantageous.
