Project Description:

Project Title: Designing Engaging Learning Experiences for Visitor and Community Engagement

The Office of Employee Development is seeking a student volunteer to support the enhancement of existing learning resources and a Learning Hub environment - a curated learning ecosystem designed to strengthen the skills of career fields that directly support public engagement, including Visitor Services, Recreation, Tribal, Cultural Resources, and Public Risk Management.

This project focuses on bringing existing learning content to life through creative design, visual storytelling, and innovative engagement strategies. The selected student will help transform current materials into more interactive, visually compelling, and user-friendly experiences by incorporating elements of graphic design, multimedia, and gamification inspired by approaches used in the private sector.

Working alongside project leads, the student will contribute to reimagining how employees experience learning - moving beyond static resources toward more dynamic, engaging formats that support real-world application, connection, and professional growth. This is a unique opportunity to shape a first-of-its-kind learning experience that blends creativity, innovation, and public service impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enhance existing learning materials through visual design and layout improvements
  • Create graphics, infographics, or simple multimedia elements to support learning activities
  • Explore and apply gamification concepts to increase engagement
  • Recommend innovative ways to present content based on industry trends
  • Support the design and feel of a SharePoint-based learning hub to improve user experience

Qualifications

  • Graphic design (e.g., Canva, Adobe, or similar tools)
  • Interest in user experience (UX) and visual communication
  • Familiarity with or curiosity about gamification or interactive learning
  • Creative thinking and ability to translate ideas into visuals
  • Interest in public service, education, or community engagement

Requirements

  • To qualify, you must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution.
  • You also must be in good academic standing as defined by your institution.
  • Attach a copy of your transcripts to your application package for verification.

Benefits

  • The government-wide "Semester of Service" Student Volunteer Program, as authorized under 5 U.S.C Β§31114 and 5 CFR Part 3085, enables Federal agencies to engage students in unpaid, project-based assignments of limited duration.
  • These assignments are designed to align with each agency's strategic priorities, offering participants practical experience within Federal operations while supporting the advancement of targeted initiatives.
