Role Description
We are looking for a Thumbnail Optimization Designer who can do something most designers can't: pair real design talent with the analytical instinct to know which videos to repackage and why. You'll be working through our backlog of legacy videos—identifying the ones with the highest re-optimization potential and redesigning their thumbnails to lift click-through rate (CTR).
Job Duties & Responsibilities
-
Identify the legacy videos worth repackaging using YouTube Analytics, search-demand signals (Google Trends, YouTube autocomplete, the Studio Research tab), and competitive thumbnail research.
-
Study the patterns behind our highest-performing evergreen thumbnails and strong competitor thumbnails to inform every redesign.
-
Design re-optimized thumbnails that meet our brand standards: high-contrast, scroll-stopping, clear at small scale, emotionally compelling, and built to earn the click.
-
Use AI image-generation tools alongside traditional design software to develop concepts and produce finished, on-brand thumbnails.
-
Present each redesign with a short rationale: what the data showed, what you changed, and the expected impact.
-
Track before/after CTR on every thumbnail you swap and quickly adjust course when the data shows underperformance.
-
Coordinate with the YouTube Optimization & Publishing Manager on backlog priority and with the team on swap timing, routing every change through manager review and VP approval before it goes live.
-
Once the backlog is cleared, contribute to ongoing thumbnail production for the channel.
Qualifications
-
2–5 years in graphic design or art direction, ideally focused on social media or video-platform packaging.
-
Strong hands-on design execution in Photoshop or equivalent—this role produces finished thumbnails, not just direction.
-
Must have hands-on experience with AI image-generation tools in a real production workflow (e.g., Nano Banana Pro, Midjourney, or similar).
-
Self-directed research habits: comfortable mining search data, auditing competitor channels, and building your own work queue.
-
A track record of making and defending data-driven design decisions.
-
Experience with YouTube Analytics or comparable video-performance tools.
-
Familiarity with A/B testing methodology (YouTube Test & Compare a plus).
Requirements
-
An up-to-date Mac or Windows computer with antivirus protection.
-
Reliable, high-speed internet and a quiet, distraction-free workspace.
-
Comfort learning new tools quickly, and hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, OneDrive).
-
During contract period—availability during core business hours, Monday–Friday, 9 am–6 pm EST, to collaborate with the team.
Benefits
-
This is a contract-to-hire position. After a paid trial period where you'll have the chance to show your skills, strong performers are converted to full-time W-2 employees.
-
Once converted to full-time employment, you'll receive:
-
Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, with 80% of premiums covered by the company.
-
80 hours of paid vacation to start, growing with tenure.
-
40 hours of personal days each year, plus 7 paid holidays.
-
Paid gym membership and a 50% discount on all Dr. Berg products.
-
Fully remote work with a real emphasis on work–life balance.
-
Pay Range: $24–$34/hour depending on experience
-
Hours: Monday–Friday, 9 am–6 pm EST, with a one-hour unpaid lunch
-
Location: Fully remote (U.S.)
-
Type: Contract-to-hire (W-2 upon conversion)
