Role Description

The Director, Data and Analytics, is accountable for the delivery and ongoing operation of ESA's enterprise data platform. The role converts an approved platform roadmap into working, supported production capabilities, including:

• Ingestion from source systems
• Curated and modeled data across medallion layers
• Governed access
• Analytics assets the business runs on

This leader owns the platform in production, including its reliability, cost, data quality, and the technical debt the team creates.

The team is small and senior by design, consisting of a Senior Data Engineer and a Technical Lead who coordinates offshore engineering. The expectation is that this leader participates in:

• Design reviews
• Release readiness activities
• Root cause analysis

The technical environment includes:

• Databricks Lakehouse on AWS
• Lakeflow declarative pipelines
• Medallion layering
• Kimball dimensional and data vault modeling
• Unity Catalog governance
• Tableau for business intelligence

A multi-year platform program is underway, integrating various systems and data sources. ESA is actively applying artificial intelligence to enhance data operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
• Ten or more years of professional experience in data engineering or analytics engineering
• Four or more years leading teams that build and operate production data platforms
• Multi-year accountability for a production data platform
• Demonstrated depth on a modern cloud data platform
• Dimensional modeling depth
• Strong SQL skills
• Working fluency in Python
• Experience delivering integrations across heterogeneous sources
• Experience owning release management and production readiness
• Experience leading distributed teams
• Experience managing implementation partners or vendors
• Experience building and defending a capacity plan
