Role Description

Our client is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to spearhead the pre-operational workflow for our global coastal ocean modeling system. In this fully remote role, you will bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI/ML, petabyte-scale data infrastructure, and EuroHPC supercomputers—delivering data-driven insights that safeguard coastal communities and advance global ocean science.

What You Will Do

• Build Next-Gen Geospatial Workflows: Engineer open-source, reproducible global coastline datasets from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and create automated, data-driven unstructured mesh generation models using tools like Gmsh.
• Supercharge HPC & Cloud Architecture: Transition legacy HPC workflows from Microsoft Azure to EuroHPC systems. Create portable containerized execution pipelines with Apptainer/Singularity.
• Manage & Analyze Petabyte-Scale Datasets: Design scalable pipelines for heterogeneous data, including raw tide-gauge observations, ARGO floats, DEMs, and L3/L4 satellite products.
• Leverage AI/ML for Quality Control: Implement automated, machine learning-assisted (scikit-learn, PyTorch, XGBoost) quality control and anomaly detection frameworks across multi-terabyte datasets.
• Optimize Global Ocean Simulations: Fine-tune, calibrate, and scale hydrodynamic simulations using SCHISM and TELEMAC, solving performance bottlenecks with parallel processing (MPI / OpenMP).
• Innovate High-Performance Visualizations: Develop bespoke analytics and visualization pipelines (PyVista, ParaView, Datashader) capable of processing massive unstructured meshes that exceed memory limits.

Qualifications

• Education: University degree corresponding to EQF Level 7 (Master’s degree or 5+ years of higher education).
• Experience: Minimum of 10 years of professional IT experience, including:
  • Python programming (scientific stack: NumPy, pandas, Xarray, SciPy, Dask, Numba).
  • Scikit-learn and designing CI/CD pipelines.
  • Containers (Apptainer/Singularity) & Cloud Architecture (specifically Microsoft Azure).
  • High-Performance Computing (HPC).
• Certification: Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) certified.
• Languages: Working proficiency in English (CEFR B2 or higher).

Requirements

• Core Technical Mastery:
  • Geospatial Processing: GDAL, PROJ, GEOS, Shapely, GeoPandas, Rasterio, PyProj.
  • Scientific Formats & Mesh Design: NetCDF, Zarr, Icechunk, CF Conventions, unstructured mesh optimization (Gmsh).
  • Validation & Hydrodynamics: Hydrodynamic modeling (SCHISM, TELEMAC), tidal analysis using utide, and automated SSH, temperature, and salinity model validation.
