Role Description

The Data Scientist will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by leveraging data to inform strategic decisions and initiatives. This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded CDC Foundation program aimed at helping the nation’s public health agencies.

Working within the Informatics and Analytics Department and Great Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center (GPTEC), the Data Scientist will:

  • Utilize advanced analytics, statistical techniques, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization techniques.
  • Collaborate to ensure data processes are integrated into the informatics architecture, aligned with tribal needs, and focused on accessibility.
  • Advance modern, comprehensive, user-friendly public health cloud-based data infrastructure for 18 tribal communities.
  • Support the construction of GPTEC’s data infrastructure, including real-time tribal-specific dashboards.
  • Facilitate public health investigations, interventions, surveillance, tracking services, and epidemiological analysis.

The Data Scientist will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Data Coordinating Unit of GPTEC. This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Data:
    • Work with the Data Engineer to expand and optimize data and data pipelines.
    • Code/transform unstructured data to structured formats for analysis.
    • Collect or extract data from various sources, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
    • Load data into storage systems or data warehouses.
    • Optimize data pipelines, infrastructure, and workflows for performance and scalability.
  • Visualization and Communication:
    • Collaborate with GPTEC staff and epidemiologists to plan data dashboard content.
    • Solicit data visualization needs from GPTEC staff and tribal public health departments.
    • Build tribal-specific dashboards using available data sources.
    • Update current dashboards to connect to automated data pipelines.
    • Ensure dashboards are interpretable by a general audience.
    • Create compelling visualizations and reports to communicate findings.
    • Present data-driven insights clearly to facilitate informed decision-making.
  • General:
    • Develop, implement, and improve data analysis and visualization tools.
    • Integrate data flows into the informatics system for automation and streamlining.
    • Provide data-driven support to inform public health policies and initiatives.
    • Stay abreast of emerging trends in data science and analytics.
    • Explore innovative approaches to address public health challenges.
    • Assist with the transition of current dashboards over to Power BI if decided.
    • Up to 10% domestic travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, or related field.
  • Master’s or PhD in a related field (ex: MPH) preferred but not required.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Highly proficient with SQL, Python, JavaScript, C#, etc.
  • Proficiency in SAS and R required.
  • Expertise in Tableau and/or Power BI required, with a focus on interactive data visualization (3+ years preferred).
  • Experience using Microsoft Fabric or similar data management software preferred.
  • Understanding of API ecosystems and experience in designing dashboards using live data.
  • Experience working with relational databases.
  • Understanding of cloud and distributed systems principles.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements.
  • Professional certifications in data science, machine learning, or public health analytics preferred.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
