[Hiring] Underwriting Expert for AI Research Project @Aptura

Role Description

Aptura works with leading foundational AI labs to bring institutional finance expertise directly into AI model development. Founded by ex-Lazard and Partners Group professionals, we operate from London and San Francisco.

You've built deep expertise in insurance across underwriting, claims, or risk and produced work that drives real decisions. Now that expertise has a new application: shaping how frontier AI models reason through complex insurance problems.

What you'll do

• Design realistic underwriting tasks: submissions, risk calls, and pricing decisions without clean answers.
• Write evaluation rubrics that reflect how strong underwriters actually reason: appetite, exposure, terms, and price.
• Review AI-generated work and flag where models misjudge risk, misapply guidelines, or price against appetite and explain why it matters.
• Build reference underwriting materials that set the benchmark models are tested against.
• Communicate decisions and rationale clearly in writing.

How Engagements Work

Fully remote, part-time and flexible. Work is scoped by project and ranges from short engagements to ongoing collaborations, structured as a contract or a monthly retainer.

Qualifications

• 5–8+ years underwriting commercial or specialty lines — as an underwriter, senior underwriter, or underwriting manager.
• You’ve owned a book and can judge appetite fit and price a risk on sight.
• CPCU, ARM, ACII / FCII, or equivalent (preferred, not required).
• You can explain an underwriting decision clearly enough to teach the reasoning, not just the outcome.

Compensation

$80–$200 per hour, aligned with expertise, scope, and impact; exceptional or highly specialised expertise can go higher. Ongoing engagements are typically structured as a monthly retainer rather than hourly billing.
