Role Description

The Temporary Community Outreach Specialist/Community Health Worker supports the Office of Community Outreach & Engagement (COE) in expanding cancer prevention education, community engagement, and outreach within designated counties of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center catchment area. Assigned service areas may include Hood, Parker, Wise, Somervell, and Johnson counties.

• Serve as a community-based liaison delivering cancer prevention and health education.
• Develop and strengthen relationships with local organizations.
• Identify opportunities for community education and engagement.
• Connect community partners with appropriate COE programs, resources, and educational opportunities.
• Support COE’s efforts to strengthen and expand outreach and engagement.
• Familiarity with the communities within the assigned service area is preferred.
• This is a part-time (approximately 10 hours per month) remote position.
• Regular local travel throughout the assigned service area is required.
• Occasional travel outside the assigned area may be required.
• Must be available for occasional night and weekend work.
• The expected assignment length is 1 year, with the opportunity for extension.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with community members and organizations from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work independently in a remote and community-based environment.
• Basic computer, virtual communication, and data-entry skills.
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout the assigned geographic service area.
• Availability for occasional evening and weekend community activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in public health, health promotion, community health, social services, or a related field (preferred).
• Established knowledge of, residence in, or demonstrated connection to the assigned community or service area (preferred).
• Knowledge of or experience in cancer prevention, screening, early-detection, or cancer-related health education (preferred).
• Current Texas Community Health Worker (CHW) certification (preferred).
• Previous experience in community outreach, health education, community engagement (preferred).
• Experience working with community organizations to support educational or outreach activities (preferred).
• Bilingual skills based on the needs of the assigned community (preferred).

Job Duties

• Deliver approved cancer prevention, screening, and health education presentations to community organizations and residents.
• Identify opportunities for cancer education and outreach within the assigned service area.
• Represent COE at approved community events, meetings, health fairs, and educational activities.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of community contacts, outreach activities, and educational programs.
• Participate virtually in required COE meetings and program updates.
• Work occasional evenings and weekends based on community outreach needs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Various administrative and clerical assignments filled on an as-needed basis.

• Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of internal and external contacts.
• Ability to make basic decisions regarding sequence of work or similar matters.
• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to understand and follow procedures or guidelines of simple to moderate complexity.
• Ability to work with confidential information.
• Basic knowledge of computers, office equipment, and clerical tasks.

Salary Information

Salary is commensurate with education, skills, and relevant experience.
