[Hiring] Technical Director, Middle Market Industry Segment - Commercial @Nationwide

Role Description

This Technical Director will focus on the Manufacturing & Distribution industry segments, and can be hired in a remote/work-from-home (WFH) capacity or in one of our offices. Some limited travel is required, averaging 1x/month.

Qualified candidates should have an expertise in Commercial Lines Insurance. Strong preference for technical underwriting experience (with authority) and experience underwriting Manufacturing & Distribution accounts.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and implementation of strategic long and short-range plans to drive profitable business opportunities within assigned Commercial Middle Market industry segment(s).
• Monitor industry portfolio management to verify risk selection and quality are in alignment with risk appetite and strategy.
• Provide guidance, direction, and authority on industry practice referrals.
• Maintain appropriate level of authority in providing technical assistance and support to underwriting teams across the country.
• Advise the national field underwriting organization through effective risk selection, agent/broker relationships, portfolio management, and quality underwriting decisions.
• Collaborate with industry business leaders and field underwriting teams to establish and maintain underwriting guidelines and strategies for retention and new business.
• Regularly collaborate with Risk Management and Claims teams to learn about trends and insights while making recommendations in underwriting practice.
• Foster a continuous learning and development culture by educating field underwriting teams and providing mentoring and coaching.
• Participate in broker visits and industry events to strengthen relationships and gain market insights.
• Complete underwriting quality reviews to confirm alignment with underwriting strategy and expectations for assigned industry segment(s).
• May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate studies preferably in business or a related field; graduate studies preferred.
• CPCU, ARM or other industry designations preferred.
• Typically, 10+ years of Middle Market and/or other related commercial lines underwriting experience.

• Comprehensive industry knowledge including underwriting, pricing, operations, producer management, competitive landscape, and product development.
• Demonstrated ability to drive for results and strong industry underwriting acumen.
• Strong competency in strategic and organizational agility while fostering a collaborative underwriting environment.
• Proven communication, collaboration, relationship management, influencing skills, customer focus, and conflict resolution skills.
• Advanced level of industry underwriting expertise.
• Knowledge of commercial property & casualty products, finance and actuarial concepts, regulatory environment, reinsurance, and account management.
• Ability to communicate effectively while engaging and motivating people.
