[Hiring] Squad Boss, Wildland Fire Management Lead @State of Washington

Role Description

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northwest Region as a Kulshan Module Squad Boss. The squad boss position is instrumental to the Kulshan Module’s workplace culture and plays a major role in the Northwest Region’s Wildfire Program. Duties Responsibilities:

• Wildfire Suppression:
  • Protects human life, natural resources, and property on Department-protected lands from wildland and urban interface fires.
  • Provides direct fire line supervision of hand crew members.
  • Assists in ensuring safe and efficient use of the crew as an effective firefighting resource.
  • May perform ICS functions as Incident Commander Type 4 and 5.
  • Works cooperatively with other fire protection authorities on joint jurisdiction fires.
• Community Resilience and Fuels Management:
  • Leads squad members to conduct site fuels and fire effects data collection.
  • Conducts home ignition zone assessments.
  • Leads squad to conduct non-commercial thinning and slash abatement.
• Preparedness:
  • Plans and implements training for seasonal crews and interagency cooperators.
  • Ensures safe working practices are followed.
  • Tracks crew training and ensures position task books are completed accurately.
• Fire Training:
  • Prepares for and participates in interagency training classes.
  • Assists with administration of Work Capacity Tests (pack tests).
  • Plans drills and training exercises for the Hand Crew.
• Perform Other Duties as Assigned:
  • May function as Crew Supervisor in absence of Crew Superintendent or Foreman.
  • May assist with fire prevention and fire regulation program.
  • May assist in performing tasks involving timber presale preparation.
• Perform Physical Fitness Training:
  • Requires passing annual work capacity tests at the arduous or moderate levels.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of wildland fire suppression tactics and fire behavior recognition.
• Certified as a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 1.

Requirements

• Must pass work capacity test annually at the arduous level as required by NWCG.
• Work is performed in the office setting (30%) and unimproved natural areas (70%).
• Position requires a large amount of travel (50%).
• A current, valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
