SPG Cargo & Logistics is seeking an experienced Senior Claims Specialist to join its Claims & Recoveries team. This position is responsible for investigating, evaluating, and managing a diverse portfolio of cargo and transportation-related insurance claims, including marine cargo, stock throughput, and liability claims involving transportation and supply chain intermediaries.

The Senior Claims Specialist will handle claims arising from the movement, handling, and storage of goods, as well as the professional and contractual responsibilities of freight brokers, freight forwarders, logistics providers, and other supply chain intermediaries.

The position requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to interpret insurance policies, evaluate liability, coordinate investigations, and effectively manage claims from initial notification through resolution.

The successful candidate will be expected to handle claims across multiple coverage lines and programs, with assignments and responsibilities evolving based on departmental needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently investigate, evaluate, and manage assigned cargo and transportation-related claims from first notice of loss through final resolution.
  • Handle claims involving marine cargo, inland marine, stock throughput, cargo legal liability, contingent cargo, warehouse legal liability, and other transportation and logistics insurance products.
  • Investigate claims involving physical loss or damage, theft, non-delivery, misdelivery, temperature deviation, contamination, improper handling, and other cargo-related exposures.
  • Evaluate claims involving the liability of freight brokers, freight forwarders, warehouse operators, motor carriers, and other supply chain participants.
  • Review relevant shipping and transportation documentation, including bills of lading, contracts, commercial invoices, delivery receipts, carrier agreements, and other supporting materials.
  • Coordinate investigations with insureds, brokers, surveyors, investigators, legal counsel, and other service providers.
  • Evaluate damages, establish and maintain appropriate reserves, and identify opportunities for settlement, salvage, and subrogation.
  • Manage general average and other specialized marine cargo matters as assigned.
  • Analyze insurance policies, endorsements, exclusions, conditions, and applicable coverage limitations to determine potential coverage.
  • Evaluate the legal and contractual responsibilities of insureds and other parties involved in cargo transportation and logistics operations.
  • Review broker-carrier agreements, transportation contracts, warehouse agreements, and other relevant contractual documents.
  • Apply relevant transportation liability principles, including the Carmack Amendment, where applicable.
  • Identify potential coverage issues and prepare written coverage analyses, reservation of rights recommendations, and declination recommendations.
  • Assess liability, causation, damages, and available defenses to support appropriate claim outcomes.
  • Recognize complex coverage issues, significant exposures, and potential litigation matters requiring escalation.
  • Develop and execute appropriate investigation and resolution strategies for assigned claims.
  • Negotiate settlements and resolve claims in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and authority requirements.
  • Maintain accurate reserves, claim notes, financial records, and supporting documentation within the claims management system.
  • Ensure timely claim handling, appropriate diary management, and compliance with internal and insurer reporting requirements.
  • Identify and pursue salvage, subrogation, and other recovery opportunities.
  • Prepare claim summaries, coverage recommendations, and status reports for internal leadership and insurance markets.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for insureds, brokers, and other stakeholders on assigned claims.
  • Communicate claim developments, coverage issues, outstanding requirements, and resolution strategies clearly and professionally.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, legal, and other internal departments on complex claims and emerging exposures.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, surveyors, investigators, and other technical experts as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of claims-handling procedures, reporting standards, and operational efficiencies.
  • Support other claims-related responsibilities and projects as assigned by the Head of Claims & Recoveries.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of insurance claims-handling experience, preferably involving marine cargo, stock throughput, inland marine, commercial property, or transportation-related claims.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently investigate, evaluate, and resolve complex insurance claims.
  • Strong understanding of insurance policy interpretation, coverage analysis, and claims management.
  • Experience reviewing loss documentation, coordinating investigations, and evaluating damages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear coverage analyses and claim recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a diverse caseload with competing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment while recognizing matters requiring supervisory or insurer approval.
  • Proficiency with claims management systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Requirements

  • Experience handling marine cargo and stock throughput claims.
  • Familiarity with transportation and logistics liability exposures, particularly those involving freight brokers and other supply chain intermediaries.
  • Knowledge of cargo transportation contracts, bills of lading, and applicable transportation liability laws.
  • Experience with general average, salvage, subrogation, or complex cargo investigations.
  • Active adjuster licenses in applicable jurisdictions or willingness to obtain required licenses.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay with comprehensive health benefits, retirement savings matching and company-paid life and disability plans.
  • Generous paid time off, paid parental leave and a wellbeing program designed to support real work/life balance.
  • A collaborative, high-performing culture with meaningful engagement, community impact through HUB Gives and genuine room to grow your career.
