[Hiring] Scientific Infrastructure Engineer @Emerald Cloud Lab

Role Description

The Scientist at ECL exemplifies the ideal of the "Engineering-driven Scientist." Every scientist at Emerald learns to code, working in the Wolfram Language, and the eclectic team comes together to tackle the singular challenges at the intersection of understanding experimental detail, architecting the logistics for a new model of industrial lab facility, integrating new instrumentation, and building the software system that captures it all.

The Scientific Infrastructure team implements and maintains software that supports all experimental operations at Emerald Cloud Lab. The team engineers systems that direct, track, and support laboratory experiments.

• Architecting and developing new software solutions to increase the speed or reliability of the laboratory operations team
• Maintaining advanced laboratory support systems, including inventory management and asset tracking
• Updating SLL, Emerald’s software library, to provide a better development experience for internal and external users

Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or Biology
• 2 years of experience as a Scientific Infrastructure Engineer, Scientific Automation Engineer, Research Scientist - Automation & Systems, Research & Development Infrastructure Scientist, or Research Engineer
• Experience with Mathematica Coding
• Comfortable with rigorous data analysis and experimental design
• Capable and willing to learn computer programming (no prior experience necessary, but it is a welcome bonus)
• Capable and willing to learn to program robotic automation (no prior experience necessary, but it is a welcome bonus)
• Worked extensively in the course of research to troubleshoot both experiments and complex instrumentation
• Experience conducting a wide variety of different experiment types and excited to quickly develop expertise in a very diverse array of new methods and instrumentation
• Enjoy building systems and automating processes
• Detail-oriented thinker who takes pride in precision experimentation

Requirements

• Passionate about science, technology, and medicine
• Impressively empathetic; can argue the rationale you disagree with as convincingly as the one you agree with
• Intellectually fearless; stretching yourself well out of your comfort zone across multiple disciplines is more the rule than the exception at Emerald
• Curious; compelled to see where first-principles reasoning leads when it diverges from standard assumptions

Company Description

The Emerald Cloud Laboratory (ECL) enables life scientists to move out of the lab, and to conduct research entirely from a computer. Stepping away from manual completion of experiments at the bench, scientists on the ECL leverage the remote, automated execution of all standard biology and chemistry experiments in Emerald’s industrial lab facilities, working within a software platform for all stages of research workflows, from experimental design to data analysis.
