Role Description
The Range Ecologist will be primarily focused on conservation delivery in North Texas, with some work in other parts of the state and beyond as opportunities and capacity permit.
- Work closely with local landowners to implement working lands conservation programs, including the Audubon Conservation Ranching (ACR) Program.
- Engage, cultivate, and enroll landowners into conservation programs.
- Assist landowners with the implementation of innovative land management practices.
- Develop habitat management plans (HMPs) to determine land management goals and ensure program compliance.
- Support practices such as adaptive grazing, prescribed fire, grass and rangeland restoration, invasive species removal, and establishing rotational grazing infrastructure.
- Conduct vegetation diversity and use monitoring to ensure compliance with program goals.
- Work remotely with field duties primarily in the North Texas region, with some responsibilities in other parts of the state and New Mexico.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in range management, ecology, natural resources management, wildlife management, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- Experience with project development/coordination, conservation planning or similar work.
- Knowledge of local agencies, organizations, and programs to help landowners secure funding for improved rangeland management practices.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to synthesize complex information.
- Strong project management skills, including setting and implementing effective goals and objectives.
- Commitment to Audubon’s organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Experience with grassland/vegetation plant identification and management knowledge.
- Experience with bird identification and management knowledge.
- Working knowledge of ArcGIS, GPS, and other GIS technologies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license for safe operation of 4-wheel drive vehicles.
- Ability to traverse long distances on uneven terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish is a plus.
Requirements
- Ability to work autonomously and within a team.
- Comfortable working occasional weekends and evenings with extensive day travel and occasional overnight travel.
- Ability to build consensus among a wide range of individuals.
Benefits
- Competitive salary range of $50,000 - $55,000 per year.
