Role Description

The Assistant Operator, β€œOn the Road”, position requires extended travel including several months at a time without the possibility to go home. Operators are responsible for the safe operation on rail and road, as well as the preventive, actual, and post-maintenance or repairs of the RFD vehicle. They work closely with the Chief Operator to minimize downtime and deliver RFD service according to schedule. Operators represent the company image and are expected to act professionally when servicing customers. They are responsible for identifying safety events or obstacles at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to the Field Manager; in their absence, will report to other Field Managers or the Manager of UT RFD Services.
  • Assists Chief Operator in marking rail defects according to set standards.
  • Maintains a professional attitude towards colleagues, customers, and the general public.
  • Ensures all railroad and highway safety as well as operating procedures are maintained.
  • Accountable for safety and quality as the number one priority.
  • Open to changes in the workplace and applies directives according to established standards.
  • Adheres to instructions in reference books and customer playbooks.
  • Partners with Chief Operator to maintain high standards of maintenance, including cleanliness and 5S on trucks.
  • Produces necessary paperwork including e-log reports, maintenance reports, trip reports, and fuel reports.
  • Performs Pre and Post-trip maintenance every working day under the supervision of the Chief Operator.
  • Ensures validity of IFTA Sticker registration and insurance, reporting to Field Manager as directed.
  • Overall responsible for the vehicle and its maintenance.
  • Maintains Logbooks, DOT papers, and Timesheets.
  • Ensures compliance with all DOT regulations including hours of service regulations.
  • Coaches, trains, protects, and assists new employees in the desired work environment.
  • Maintains controlled expenses as low as possible.
  • Completes weekly expense reports, timesheets, inventory, and general truck condition reports.
  • Understands that the truck is to be parked at the same lodging location as the Chief Operator every night unless specified otherwise.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Excellent safety record.
  • Knowledge in computer programs, electrical, and mechanical is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license Class A or B with Air Brake endorsement.
  • Must continuously meet company & DOT Driving Standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail.
  • Minimum of a High school diploma or GED; mechanical, electrical, troubleshooting knowledge preferred.
  • Microsoft Office skills, including Excel, Word, Microsoft Teams, Concur, and more.
  • Ability to manage costs and adjust where necessary.
  • Must be a Team Player and willing to do whatever it takes to make the customer happy in a safe and ethical way.
  • Capable of driving quality performance and developing excellent customer relationships.
  • High level of maturity and punctuality.
  • Drive safety, accountability, professional image, and attitude.
  • Must be self-motivated with integrity.

Requirements

  • Extended travel capability.
  • Punctual.
  • All safety training valid for customers and eRail Safe.
  • Ability to travel to customers anywhere in North America (Valid Passport).
  • No Criminal Records.
  • Communicate in English (written & spoken, French for Eastern Canada).

Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to dust, oil, grease, fumes, or airborne particles. Although work is primarily done inside a testing vehicle, the employee might frequently be required to be outside in any weather conditions. Must be able to lift and carry parts up to 75 lbs, perform occasional mechanical tasks, and negotiate varied ground conditions. Requires the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Must be capable of regularly climbing up to 10 feet. The employee is required to talk and hear. Normal correctable vision is required.
