Role Description

Current or former recipient of Substance use disorder or dependency mental health services. Peer navigation skills to perform a wide range of tasks that are designed to assist clients in regaining personal control over their lives and over their own recovery processes. Must be able to comply with Hawaii Certified Peer Specialist state requirements and maintain high standards related to UHP’s code of ethics, confidentiality practices, including but not limited to PHI & HIPAA, patient safety, and additional Hoʻola Utelehealth program policies and procedures.

Location: Remote, with travel as required by the job. This is a part-time position working Monday to Friday, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM plus extended hours and weekends. The position would work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Essential Job Duties and Functions

  • Interacts with treatment team members to promote a cohesive and collaborative team culture.
  • Provides support to team members and clients within the Hoʻola UTelehealth program.
  • Provides a range of supportive services under the supervision of the Program Manager, including:
    • Ongoing support
    • Screening and gathering information
    • Input into recovery plans
    • Skill building and group activities
    • Coordinating services with ancillary treatment providers
    • Making referrals to additional services and supports
  • Attends clinical supervision by the Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) or Mental Health Professional (MHP) at a minimum of one (1) hour of supervision for each one-hundred sixty (160) hours worked.
  • Development and application of personalized coping skills, including:
    • Sharing common recovery experiences
    • Identifying individual warning signs of relapse
    • Developing crisis plans and crisis management skills
  • Facilitates or Co-facilitates Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Groups.
  • Teaches and models self-help techniques by convening and facilitating peer support groups.
  • Helps consumers identify, understand, and combat stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.
  • Meets with individual Case Managers to assist with the development of Individual Recovery Plans.
  • Crisis outreach as necessary or as directed by Program Manager.
  • Mentors and assists other Peer Specialists as they move toward becoming a Certified Peer Specialist.
  • Complies with all legal requirements and company policies.
  • Performs potentially other additional duties as assigned by Program Manager.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma, or High School Equivalency
  • One (1) year of experience providing direct services to individuals with Substance use disorder/addiction mental health services or other behavioral health issues, paid or unpaid.
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist in the State of Hawaii (HCPS).
  • Demonstrated experience and evidence of Substance use disorder/addiction mental health activity in the past two (2) years.
  • Certification as a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Facilitator Preferred.
  • Unexpired valid Driver’s license, preferred.
  • Current BLS CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • CPI Certification or Crisis prevention training preferred.

Skills Knowledge

  • Strong commitment to the rights and ability of each person with substance use disorder to live in normal community settings.
  • Skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships with all affected persons.
  • Understanding of clients’ rights and personal preferences in treatment.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, in the English language.
