Role Description

This role involves working as an Oncology Data Specialist, Certified at Duke University Hospital, where you will be responsible for abstracting and coding a wide range of medical data in compliance with established standards.

• Abstract medical history, physical findings, screening information, and previous cancer history.
• Document diagnostic findings, including types, dates, and results of procedures used to diagnose cancer.
• Record cancer treatment details such as surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone, or immunotherapy.
• Collect patient identification information including age, gender, race/ethnicity, birthplace, and residence.
• Track outcomes of annual follow-up information regarding patient status, recurrence, and treatment.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical/radiation techniques.
• Participate in continuing education programs to stay updated on new chemo and hormone drugs.
• Apply ICD-10, FORDS, AJCC, and SEER coding guidelines to inpatient and outpatient diagnoses and procedures.
• Ensure adherence to data management protocols as set forth in state and national requirements.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

• Preferred: Associate degree in Cancer Registry Management or Health Information Management.
• Preferred: 2 years as an Oncology Data Specialist or Cancer/Tumor Registrar in a hospital or central cancer registry.
• Oncology Data Specialist certification required.

Requirements

• Proficient in Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), ICD-10 Coding, AJCC TNM, Collaborative Staging, and SEER staging.
• Excellent organizational skills with good follow-through and investigative/analytic skills.
• Ability to achieve productivity goals under pressure.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of Oncology Registry software, Windows-based software, and EPIC EMR.
