Role Description
This position serves as a hydrographer for the Maine Coastal Mapping Initiative (MCMI). MCMI conducts sonar seafloor mapping and collects bathymetry and backscatter data, sediment information, benthic fauna, and water column data. These contribute to numerous ongoing efforts used for fisheries management, marine habitat modeling, and marine planning.
- Conducting vessel-based sonar data acquisition in the Gulf of Maine.
- Maintaining hardware, software, and ancillary equipment.
- Performing data QA/QC and processing and packaging data prior to submission to federal portals.
- Assisting with GIS-based textural and landscape classifications and other modeling based on sonar data.
- Assisting with writing hydrographic reports, white papers, peer-reviewed manuscripts, or other special reports.
- Supporting MCMI's other vessel-based projects, including grab sampling or collecting wildlife observations.
Qualifications
- Entry level education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field.
Requirements
- Experience with operating multibeam echosounder (MBES) equipment.
- Skill with hardware/software integration, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of marine geology, and general marine ecology or marine biology.
- Experience with GIS (ArcGIS Pro) and spatial and statistical analyses.
- Knowledge of MS Office products, R, and/or Python is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A high level of organization and ability to balance multiple responsibilities.
- Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.
