Role Description

Join Project Iktomi — a speech annotation and transcription project focused on improving cutting-edge speech and language AI systems through natural conversational English data!

• Work with recordings of natural, unscripted conversational English.
• Validate and adjust automatically generated speech boundaries using Praat.
• Produce verbatim, time-aligned orthographic transcriptions.
• Identify prosodic cues such as pauses, pitch resets, and final syllable lengthening.
• Review waveform and spectrogram views and confirm segmentation by ear.
• Preserve natural speech characteristics including disfluencies, false starts, overlaps, filled pauses, and non-linguistic sounds.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native proficiency in US English.
• Prior experience with transcription and familiarity with Praat, ADAP, or similar speech annotation tools.
• Strong understanding of phonetics, phonology, and prosodic annotation.
• Ability to recognize intonational phrases, pitch accents, and prosodic boundaries.
• Keen ear for spontaneous conversational speech, including disfluencies and overlaps.
• Strong attention to detail and consistency in transcription conventions.
• Background in linguistics, phonetics, speech science, or related fields is strongly preferred.
• Must be residing in the United States.
