Role Description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced Japanese language and cultural professionals with strong expertise in linguistic nuance, cultural context, localisation, content review, and professional Japanese-language communication. This role focuses on reviewing professional documents, spreadsheets, and presentation materials involving Japanese language and cultural context. Selected experts will assess outputs for linguistic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, contextual nuance, factual quality, presentation effectiveness, and overall professional credibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Japanese Language Review
    • Evaluate Japanese-language and Japan-focused work products for accuracy, clarity, and professional quality.
    • Assess grammar, terminology, phrasing, tone, and contextual appropriateness.
    • Identify unnatural language, ambiguous wording, mistranslations, and linguistic inconsistencies.
    • Review whether content communicates its intended meaning accurately.
    • Apply professional judgement grounded in Japanese language expertise.
  • Cultural Fluency & Context
    • Review materials for cultural appropriateness and relevance within Japanese contexts.
    • Assess whether references, examples, conventions, and communication styles are used appropriately.
    • Identify cultural inaccuracies, inappropriate assumptions, or missing context.
    • Evaluate whether materials reflect realistic Japanese social and professional norms.
    • Review content for audience suitability and cultural sensitivity.
  • Localisation & Adaptation
    • Evaluate content adapted for Japanese-speaking audiences.
    • Assess whether localisation choices preserve intended meaning while remaining natural and culturally appropriate.
    • Review terminology, messaging, formatting, and contextual adaptation.
    • Identify literal or awkward translations that reduce clarity or credibility.
    • Evaluate whether content is appropriately tailored to its target audience.
  • Content Accuracy & Consistency
    • Review written materials for factual and internal consistency.
    • Identify conflicting information, unsupported claims, and contextual errors.
    • Check consistency of terminology, names, labels, and key messages.
    • Assess whether conclusions are clearly supported by presented information.
    • Distinguish substantive linguistic or cultural issues from minor stylistic differences.
  • Documents & Presentation Review
    • Evaluate documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks for accuracy and completeness.
    • Review presentations for language quality, narrative flow, visual clarity, and cultural appropriateness.
    • Identify factual, linguistic, aesthetic, and formatting issues.
    • Assess whether charts, tables, labels, and visual elements communicate information accurately.
    • Ensure language and presentation remain consistent across deliverables.
  • Cross-Format Quality Control
    • Review related documents, spreadsheets, and presentations as an integrated set of work products.
    • Check consistency of language, terminology, figures, claims, and conclusions across formats.
    • Identify discrepancies between source information and presented outputs.
    • Evaluate whether materials maintain a coherent tone and level of localisation.
    • Assess overall professional and cultural quality.
  • Structured Evaluation & Feedback
    • Assess assigned outputs against domain-specific quality criteria.
    • Identify linguistic, cultural, factual, aesthetic, and presentation weaknesses.
    • Distinguish substantive quality issues from minor editorial concerns.
    • Provide clear, structured written feedback.
    • Apply evaluation standards consistently across assignments.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in Japanese language, localisation, translation, linguistic review, cultural consulting, content review, or a closely related field.
  • Experience as a Japanese Linguist, Japanese Translator, Japanese Language Specialist, Japanese Content Reviewer, Cultural Consultant, or similar professional.
  • Strong practical expertise in Japanese language and cultural fluency.
  • Experience reviewing or producing professional Japanese-language or Japan-focused content.
  • Strong understanding of linguistic nuance, tone, context, and culturally appropriate communication.
  • Ability to identify mistranslations, unnatural phrasing, contextual errors, and cultural inconsistencies.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Advanced proficiency with PowerPoint / Google Slides.
  • Strong spreadsheet and analytical skills.
  • Native or professional fluency in English.
  • Excellent written communication and ability to provide precise, structured feedback.
  • Master's degree or higher from a recognised institution is advantageous.

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement.
  • Fully remote.
  • Flexible scheduling based on project requirements.
  • Compensation: $70–$110/hour.
  • Work includes evaluation of Japanese-language and culturally contextualised documents, spreadsheets, reports, and presentation materials.
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance.
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party.
